“The world ended nearly one hundred and fifty years ago—they say the flames from our sun cascaded down to earth like sparkling, flaming serpents, and then vanished in an instant, leaving the world in utter darkness. This darkness lasted three days’ time, ending when the moon’s mysterious light illuminated the world with its despondent glow, revealing that only chaos remained. I was born fifty years after that night and was given a curse at birth. Some may have called it a blessing, as I’m sure it was intended to be—to have immortality given to them at birth—but there was a cost for my safety that none had anticipated. I could not die, but I also could not feel, mentally or physically. My emotions were so greatly suppressed I wasn't able to feel love, compassion, hate, or fear. Only my anger was strong enough to seep through. That was, until I met him… My name is Evangeline and this is my story; a tale of how I learned who I was… not a demon, or an angel, but what both make me…”
Born and raised in Idaho, Rose moved to the greenery of Oregon at the age of thirteen, receiving her first computer shortly after—the outlet she needed to expression her infinite imagination to its fullest potential, while deepening her love of all things fantasy. Home schooled, she taught herself how to type within a year's time and had completed her first, first draft; a feat some take for granted.
After writing for a few years with half-baked ideas and unfinished drafts, she started what would become her first completed novel, Immortal Requiem. A single story that flourished and became so vast she decided to pursue a series from the world she had create—The Silent Ballad Series.
While other series are on the horizon, The Silent Ballad Series takes precedence—aside from writing, Rose spends her free time with her family or drawing inspiration from various media outlets.
Recieved from Netgalley. Love the cover artwork, it’s sort of soft haunting but tells you everything you need to know. For a character that isn’t supposed to really feel emotion, the story is loaded with it. Friendships, betrayal, love and a lot of pain. A lot of action and fighting. It’s one of those classic dramatic ones with the characters being honourable with catchphrases and questions during each fight and cue the old fashioned evil laughter. With the scenery and mix of vampires, werewolves, demons and angels, it gave me a sort of castlevania nostalgia. There’s strong themes of good vs evil and the grey area in between. It’s not just Eva who’s struggling with her inner demons. My favourite character was Kieran, expect the unexpected and all that. I enjoyed it.
There's a ton of action here. Story telling fairly seems a bit lax as for the most part there's action and loads of it. It feels like every possible fantasy element like witches, vampires, dragons, chimeras, etc... Anything you can think of is in this book. It goes a bit overboard and feels overwhelming as you continue reading. I couldn't feel any story gripping me enough but it might differ for someone else. The plot was feeling like scifi but overboard of every possible fantasy elements makes it a weird bit.
This book was hard to get into for me. I think it was more that it was not to my taste than the story. I had trouble connecting to the characters, but that happens to me every so often. The storyline was interesting and very different than most of everything I have read in this genre.
