About the author

Buddhadeb Guha (Bengali: বুদ্ধদেব গুহ) is a popular Bengali fiction writer. He studied at the well-known St Xavier's College of the University of Calcutta.

His novels and short stories are characterized by their dreamy abstractness and romantic appeal. His essays reveal the soul of a true wanderer providing some of the most beautiful renditions of travel in Bengal. His love for forests and nature provide the background for many of his novels.

A highly successful chartered accountant by profession, and an accomplished musician, Guha is very urbane in his lifestyle. He was one of the first to create characters representing easy-going, upper middle-class modern Bengali families, whom readers could identify with, and that gave him instant popularity.

He is the recipient of many awards including Ananda Puraskar, 1976; Shiromani Puraskar; and Sharat Puraskar.

The Library of Congress has over fifty titles by him. His most famous novel, according to many, is Madhukori. It is considered a milestone in Bengali literature.
He is also the creator of Rijuda, an imaginary character who moves about in jungles with his sidekick Rudra. The jungles that he wrote about were mainly in Eastern India.

"Jongol Mahal" is a collection of nineteen short stories centered around hunting, but they lean more toward comedy than true hunting tales. Despite Buddhadeb Guha's skillful and engaging writing style, the stories fall short. There's a lot of buildup that ultimately leads nowhere, leaving the reader dissatisfied. The humor tends to lean towards farce rather than sophisticated wit. While each story has its own merits, reading one flat comedy after another became tiresome. The stories felt so monotonous that it took me 3/4 months to complete this short book.

But the writing style and use of language is unparalleled. The imagery used by the author appeals to the senses and creates a vivid image of the jungles of Bengal.
"এ রকম হয় দেখেছি। বিশেষ করে জঙ্গলে। ভীষণ একটা ভয় যখন চোখের সামনে ধেই ধেই করে নাচতে থাকে তখন আমাদের শিকারীর দল যেন নব যৌবনের দলের মতো মনে মনে সেই ভয়টাকে বুড়িয়ে যাওয়ার ভয়ের মতো তুড়ি মেরে উড়িয়ে দিই।"

"জঙ্গলে বিভিন্ন ঋতুর যেমন বিভিন্ন রূপ আছে, তেমনি বিভিন্ন ঋতুর দিন ও রাতের বিভিন্ন শব্দ আছে। তেমন করে কান পেতে শুনলে সে শব্দের মধ্যে যে বিস্তর ব্যবধান তা সহজে ধরা যায়।
শীতের রাতের একটা নিজস্ব সত্তা আছে জঙ্গলে। বিভিন্ন জঙ্গলে এর প্রকৃতি ভিন্ন। আলাদা গন্ধ ও আছে, স্বাদ আছে; আচ্ছন্ন করার ক্ষমতা আছে। তাও বিভিন্ন।"

লেবু বেশি টিপলে তিতা হয়ে যায়। 'জঙ্গল মহল'-এ বুদ্ধদেব গুহ দুর্দান্ত হিউমার আর দারুণ দারুণ সব উপমা ব্যবহার করেছেন। কয়েকটা জায়গায় প্রচন্ড হাসিও এসেছে। কিন্তু সবখানে বাড়াবাড়ি কৌতুক আনতে গিয়ে মনে হয় গল্পের রেশটাই যেনো হারিয়ে গেলো। শিকার কাহিনীর সিরিয়াসনেস আর ফুরফুরে রম্যরস একসাথে চালানো মুশকিল। মাঝেমাঝে বিরক্তিকরও। কয়েকটা গল্পে অবাঙালি ভাষা/শব্দ ব্যবহারের কারণে কাহিনীই বুঝা যায়নি। সবমিলিয়ে তাই ওভারহাইপড লেগেছে। রেটিং ৩/৫।
হাম ভাল না মারিব, গাড্ডী লাজোয়াব, দাঁতের বদলে দাঁত, মগগর বুলানেওয়ালা, পূর্ণাকোটের বাইসন, অজ মাহাত্ম্য, যমদুয়ার - এই গল্পগুলো বেটার।
