This genre-bending novel has elements of vampire romance and legal thrillers. In the mode of comic novels, thrillers, and the Black Dagger Brotherhood vampire series, it uses multiple characters to tell a story of of star-crossed love and political treachery.
Candace Stokes, blue-collar Baltimore, is broke and jobless. When things are at their bleakest, she meets Julian Michaels. When the high-ranking partner hires her at his large, D.C. law firm, she can finally complete law school. Still Candace worries. He probably has ideas about how she should pay off her debt to him.
But years of seeing Julian walk the firm’s hallways—ignoring her—makes the newly minted female associate wish the handsome, magnetic partner would hurry up and collect on his debt. Despite her fears that hot sex is all he could want from a Baltimoron like her.
If only she knew Julian’s been waiting 2,062 years for her, his true mate. But he can hardly tell her just yet. (Though staying away from her is sooo hard with his raging supernatural hormones.) If their relationship were discovered, it could jeopardize her chances to make partner.
And here at Blood, Justice, if you don't make partner, you'll be dinner. Wind up on the menu for the board members’ annual feast. A group of ancient vampires, they just like to treat themselves now and then. Plotting for political power through their firm’s lobbying group is pretty hard work.
Like Candace, the other young attorneys just think the place is a little weird. Are clueless about the danger they’re in. Including Kenneth Hobgood, Candace's boss and eventual BFF. But thanks to the unwanted personal attentions of his mentor, Max Little—board member, head lobbyist, and Julian's nemesis—Kenneth is about to get wise to the situation. Both he and Julian do their best to protect Candace. But when Max schemes against Julian, Candace is caught in the crossfire. They’re both accused of crimes that reach to Congress and the FBI.
Already barnstorming for clients, Candace burns to be a successful attorney. To overcome her secret and painful past, which now threatens to be exposed. When all hell breaks loose, tearing her apart from Julian, she’ll truly have to make it on her own.
I love music. I'm like kind of like Jack Black and that other guy from the movie High Fidelity. Music nerd. The themes of my work are typically overcoming difficulty and Flat Out LOVE!!! My vampires (Vampire at Law Series) and singers (Divas by the River) are all about that.

I was expecting this book to be a vampire romance – I'm a sucker and love those (unintended pun there!) I enjoyed how Candace and Julian were introduced but then it seemed to jump forward several years in time and that threw me a bit. Still, it was relatively easy to pick up and continue. It has a large cast of characters and it takes some time to work out who fits where. To be honest I never did quite work out where the predictions fitted into the story. Its a very dense novel, full of detail and information, and its more than possible I missed that part out somehow. The main problem I had was I found it hard to actually like any of the characters. Candace seemed OK and ambitious, but we didn't learn much about her personality. Nothing to really make me root for her and want her to be happy. She seemed to be waiting for Julian to want some payback but after all that time I think I’d have asked him or given up and thought he'd just been “Mr nice guy” doing a good deed. Even with lawyers that happens :) Then there's Julian...on one hand he was urbane, witty and charming, the epitome of an older vampire, and then when in close situations with Candace he acted like a 15 year old schoolboy. It just didn't gel for me. There's a good solid thriller element throughout this book, and for me that came over as far stronger than the romance, and added with the way I was unable to connect with the characters was probably why I didn't get the enjoyment I'd expected from it. As a romance it fails I think, certainly it didn't work that way for me – but as a thriller its a solid winner, with many plots taking the reader on a journey through vampire history and ambition. If what you enjoy is paranormal thrillers rather than paranormal romance ( my bent...) then this is certainly worth reading. The writing style is succinct, the editing spot on and at only 77p for 299 pages its incredible value for thriller lovers. Stars: well, if I was a lover of thrillers I’d probably have rated far higher but for me they don't really cut it – its the romance that’s the attraction and that didn't quite turn out as I'd hoped. So three and a half, its far better than just OK but for me not a four star Good.
Well, I always knew lawyers were blood-sucking monsters. Juno just does a killer job of pointing that out!
Being ex lawyer bait, (put him through law school, then . . .) I know how obnoxious and self centred lawyers can be, especially litigation lawyers. Throw in a couple thousand years of being self-described Masters of the Universe, and the nightmare blooms. And these guys are a garden of bloom . . .
First, the book is very well written. You understand the characters, the legal work is excellent, and you truly believe the actions of these people. It is unique in it's savage take on 'bloodsucking' of all types. What removed a star, for me, was a total lack of caring for any of the characters involved. I didn't truly like a single one of them, and couldn't care less what happened to them. However, the sheer excellence of the writing kept me going, kept me involved in the story to the end.
If you like legal thrillers more than paranormals, this is probably more up your alley. I like some legal thrillers, and some I find absolutely mesmerizing. This one fell somewhere in-between for me, but for others this will definitely be a five star read.
Enjoyed reading this book by Juno Ross. She has put together a complicated group of characters and plot(s) that will keep you hopping in order to get your arms around them. It s quick, easy and enjoyable reading. These vampires are different from others I have read about, but they are interestingly different. Waiting for the next book of the series.
J. Robert Ewbank author "Wesley's Wars" and "John Wesley, Natural Man, and the Isms"
Well-developed characters, a fascinating vampire history that goes back to the Roman Empire (and possibly earlier) and a wicked sense of humor vibrate through this unusual tale of a Washington law firm of real bloodsuckers. I wasn’t sure what to make of it at first, but it kept growing on me. Halfway through, the story really took off, with earlier plot threads knitting together in intriguing, unpredictable fashion.
A well written story with believable characters. The fact that it is a vampire story only adds a fun and twisted dimension to the entire plot. I suggest getting this book and settling in for a fun ride.
Loved!!!! Highly recommend to read! You will fall in love with the characters, my favorite is Sylvester....read & you will know why. Great writing KUDO' s to Juno.....keep up the fabulous work!
