Murder on Haint Branch is a mystery novel set in Western North Carolina. Infidelity, moonshining, a crooked lawman, and a self-serving preacher are the building blocks for the story. From the moment the sheriff tells Eula Sanders that her son, Charlie, has been shot, until the last few pages where we find out why Charlie died, the reader is given a glimpse into the way life really was for the Appalachian People in the early forties.
Eva McCall is the author of the popular Edge of Heaven, Children of the Mountain, Lucy's Recipe for Mountain Living and Murder on Haint Branch books. Eva is a native of Franklin North Carolina, spending her childhood with the grandmother that she protrays in her books, Lucy Davenport Carpenter. She graduated from Franklin High School, and attended Pfeiffer College.
After marrying her husband, George McCall, they moved to Michigan where George worked for General Motors, and Eva became a beautician. Eva began taking writing classes at Oakland University and Mott Community College, where she then was a member of several professional writing groups.
Since the release of her earlier books, which have sold thousands of copies, many fans awaited the release of "Murder on Haint Branch," which Eva says was the most fun writing.
In addition to her published works, Eva has another manuscript written, and several other ideas in the works.
I loved the character of Ollie, matter-of-fact young girl on a quest for the truth in 1940's NC. The use of dialect brings the characters to life. This is a story of love, loss, and growing up. I highly recommend this one.
Excellent read! The whole time I was reading it I felt like I was sitting on the porch, listening to Ollie’s story unfold. It kept my attention to the very unexpected end!
I gotta say I enjoyed this Hillbilly murder mystery a whole dang lot. This yarn is as much about a yungun growing up and coming of age and of self discovery as it is a murder mystery. The 13 year old Ollie needs to solve a few problems. First of which is who killed her uncle Charlie. Then there is the need to "fix her Granny" stop her from her non stop rocking. While doing this she needs to find out who her Mom is. All while going through a difficult puberty. As I said, I did enjoy this story, though I did expect Bo Radley to come out from behind the elm tree at any moment.
By far one of the best books I have ever read! I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this book. It is such a quick read. All the characters are relatable, even if they are in the 1940s. And the way Eva writes the controversial issues of the mountains is just incredible. Worth reading again and sharing with your friends!
It started out kind of strange and hard to follow but I kept at it . Being an ex teacher the speech was annoying but I guess people still speak that way in the hills. It was a good story about the trials and temptations of family members living so close together and being somewhat shut off from society they forget the rules.
McCall tells this mountain tale of murder, love gone wrong, and secrets told and untold, through the eyes of Ollie, a orphaned child left twelve years ago in a suitcase on her grandparent's porch. Haint is a great read and Ollie's voice is one I'll hear in my head for a long time.
This book took me back to my southern roots. I love the book and the characters were touching and the story was believable. I recommend this book to all mysteries reader. One of the best mysteries I have read in a while. Thank you and keep on writing. I won this book on Goodreads. Thank you
