Edith, the doll featured in Dare Wright's best-selling "The Lonely Doll" book series, together with her friends, Mr. Bear and Little Bear, leave their city home for a vacation on Ocracoke Island in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Their summer is spent playing on pristine beaches, discovering the seaside wildlife, getting acquainted with wild ponies, and imagining adventures on the high seas. Little Bear ignores Mr. Bear’s warning never to go on a boat without him, and he and Edith soon find themselves drifting dangerously out to sea. Luckily Mr. Bear comes to their rescue, and the two learn a valuable lesson before their vacation ends.
Dare Wright fans can jump for joy knowing that three new Wright classics have been reissued with more on the way, and Holiday For Edith was the one I was waiting for the most.
Edith and her two bear pals take a vaycay to Okracoke Island in North Carolina, hanging out by the beach and disrupting the local ponies and baby seagulls - check out the mother's angry look at the dolls in one shot.It all ends up with a suspenseful boat ride in the ocean worthy of Herman Melville.
As usual, Wright's dolls are posed as ambidextrously as possible and the framing of the shots are highly versatile, expressing mood and action perfectly. Holiday For Edith and the Bears was well worth the wait.
I swore I wouldn't read another in this series after reading the first but I didn't realize I had already requested this one through interlibrary loan. While I found this one slightly less creepy than the first one, I really will not continue reading these books. Interesting concept but there is just something that messes with my head with these photos!
Someone recently reminded me of this book, which was one of my all-time favorites as a child. I still have my copy. I never knew she had done so many others, or the history of the author. Took another look at it, and was still charmed.
