Dating is making Andrea Whitman miserable, and she’s not just tired of it, she’s jaded.
She wonders if an attractive, successful woman with a strong sense of right and wrong can find love in a fast-paced, inked-up, follow-the-path-of-least-resistance kind of world. Andrea admits she's choosey, and she can be opinionated. But after years of dating, she would settle for kindness, consideration, and some chemistry. In her pursuit of those traits, she has been insulted, demeaned, and more than a little hurt. She is ready to give up on finding a relationship to concentrate on more attainable goals like success in her high-tech career, and being a good friend and sister. But those friends, and her family, will not allow her to throw in the towel.
Andrea isn’t lacking dates. Her cup is overflowing, and there’s one man who has potential. The chemistry between them is undeniable. But when Andrea lets the disappointments of her past affect the relationships of her present, she risks losing one of the good guys when he finally does come along.
Debra Doxer was born in Boston, and other than a few lost years in the California sunshine, she has always resided in the Boston area. She writes fiction, technical software documents, illegible scribbles on sticky notes, and texts that get mangled by AutoCorrect. She writes for a living, and she writes for fun. When not writing, she’s walking her Havanese puppy and forcing her daughter to listen to New Wave 80s music.
*******3.5 stars******* When I think back to my dating years, I have one of two reactions. I either smile remembering the thrills of getting to know someone for the first time and the excitement of a new romance, or I cringe thinking about the anxiety, pressures, awkward moments, and heartbreak of the dating world. And right about between the two is where you'd find Andrea Whitman, ever the realist but also ever the dreamer. As down-to-earth as she comes across, inside she was holding out for her Atticus Finch who would sweep her off her feet...or at least have the decency to call for a second date or not leave her alone in the middle of the city to walk to her car in the dark! Sometime Soon is a relatable and refreshing light read that definitely had me relieved my dating years are over!
Tiger is the first pet I've ever had. At first I felt terrible leaving him alone in the house all day while I was at work. I was tempted to get another cat to keep him company, but I couldn't bring myself to do it. That's how it starts, right? Pretty soon two cats turn into four and four turn into eight, and then I'm one of those women. No way. ~Loc 217
There was a part of me that could relate to Andrea, because between my own experiences and those of my friends, I got her plight. She was an attractive, successful, intelligent woman who just could not seem to find the right guy. And it wasn't just that she was too picky, though at times I wanted to just tell her to zip it instead of putting herself through another "open mouth insert foot" moment. There was plenty of interest, too, but she found herself a series of men who in some way or another just did not live up to their first-meet potential. All of them but the frazzled, forgetful one who rammed her bumper, that is. Ryan was seemingly the full package, with good looks, great personality, and a career. But with multiple suitors, and the relationships of her close friends cracking and crumbling under lies and deceit, it clearly took it's toll on Andrea's view on men. I could absolutely understand her disappointment and frustration as the men she chose to spend time with just didn't impress; as she witnessed infidelity and back-stabbing all around her, even I started to feel the dating despair.
Always waiting for the other shoe to drop has become a self-fulfilling prophecy. ~Loc 3714
Andrea really tried to find herself as she was struggling, and I kept wanting her to try to lighten up and not over-think everything. But at the same time, I completely agreed with her decisions when it came to which men she just couldn't see herself dating. I liked the mystery surrounding her love life, because it wasn't blatantly obvious all along who she'd end up with. She had some amusing moments bumbling through awkward dates and anxious nights waiting for a phone call, and I just wanted her to catch a break for once. I could have used more drama and heartache to pull on the heartstrings, because despite all of Andrea's woes there wasn't a great deal of emotion on her part. But I enjoyed Andrea's journey and I was relieved for her when she finally just let go, and believed in being happy!
I would like to thank the author for providing me with an eARC copy in exchange for an honest review.
When I first started this book, I had no idea what to expect. What I received was a breath of fresh air. The best way to describe this book is real. The characters are real. The story line flows really well and I really enjoyed the writing style. Andrea Whitman is a young, intelligent, attractive female that just has not found the right guy. Her family and friends insist that she find someone to settle down with. Andrea is content with herself and is waiting for the right one. How many times have we read books, where the main character, sacrifices herself in some way or another to get the guy? Too many times! This author gives us a head strong woman that knows what she deserves. However, she has a tendency to think with her brain and not always with her heart. I think that was a challenge for Andrea.
Andrea had a lot of suitors and I really enjoyed that the book was not predictable. I really had no idea who she would choose. So many books present insta-love and insta-attraction, but the author does a great job with character development. You enjoy getting to know the men as Andrea gets to know them. Some I rooted for, than others, but overall I was happy with the individual that stole Andrea’s heart.
I love that I was able to completely relate to Andrea. As someone who has been through a lot of the dating disasters and awkwardness it was refreshing to read a story where I could see myself in a character. I love that as a reader, we were able to experience the inner struggles regarding relationships that Andrea had to deal with. There were times where I wanted to shake Andrea and tell her to stop interfering with her own happiness! I think she heard me, because by the time it came down to end, she stopped over thinking and just LIVED.
I highly recommend this book to anyone that is looking for a refreshing story about life, love, romance, and waiting for what you deserve.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book the story was well written and very lively. A lot of women might find themselves feeling as her, giving up but when you less realize, the guy of your dreams walks in. I love how she says what she has in her mind, whether indirectly or directly she manages to say it instead of being left in the dark. I think all the ladies can learn a thing or two from this book. No guy is perfect but that does not mean you have to settle for less. All relationships take work. Ryan sounds like an awesome guy. I thoroughly enjoyed when he broke the news to Andy that he bought a kitty litter for Tiger, pure awesomeness that has to show some type of responsibility and commitment. I laughed while reading this book definitively a great read! Keep it up Debra! :D
This book reminds me of a friend telling me what's going on in her life. She tries to inject a little drama into her tale and I want to know what happened because she is my friend, but the story doesn't have me at the end of my seat. I wouldn't mind reading another book by this author, though, to see if her storytelling gets better.
maybe 3.5 stars...can't decide. slow pace and author has a different sort of writing style ...for example the prologue didnt quite fit with the rest of the story ... and the character s were a little 'geeky' for my taste. still i found myself rooting for Andrea and the hunky guy (i wont reveal his name as to not give awsy any spoilers). and I couldnt put it down b\c I had to know how it ended. if you can get a free download like I did go for it.
Great read, really liked Andrea, the main character, successful in all parts of her life except her love life. A little jaded and cynical we share her progress with Ryan and others.... Would recommend it and would look out for other books by the author!
This is a fun read... the dating disasters of your every day woman. Add a stable yet shaky (I know I'm contradicting myself) job, crazy friendships, and a crazier family to endure - this is a light, fun, romantic read. I'd recommend it.
