About the author

Harishankar is a promising Bangladeshi author. The most significant point to notice is that all the four novels produced from Harishankar's pen sketch the life of the downtrodden, some of whom are from among fisherfolks, some from among prostitutes and some others are the 'harijons' or 'methors'.

মনে এত ঘৃণা-বিদ্বেষ পুষে সাহিত্যিক হওয়া যায় না, বরং পাড়ার আন্টি হিসেবে মানায়। লেখাও খুবই বিশ্রি। বছরের শুরুতে এমন অখাদ্য পড়ে মুখটা তেতো হয়ে গেলো।

নিজেকে ভাগ্যবান মনে হচ্ছে। 'কৈবর্তকথা' বইটা পড়তে পেরে? না। এই বইটা দিয়ে যে হরিশংকর জলদাস পড়া শুরু করিনি, তার জন্যই নিজেকে ভাগ্যবান ভাবছি। নইলে, এই লেখকের দ্বিতীয় কোন বই কখনো পড়তাম কিনা তা নিয়ে এখন আমার মনে যথেষ্ট সন্দেহ আছে।

বইটা শেষ করতে অনেক কষ্ট হয়েছে। কোন কোন জায়গায় তো রীতিমতো দাঁতে দাঁত চেপে রাখতে হয়েছে! মূল বিষয়ে আসার আগে অনেক ভনিতা করেছেন। তাতে বিরক্তি আরো বেড়েছে। অবাক হচ্ছি, এমন একটা গড়পড়তা বই দিয়ে তিনি কীভাবে লাইমলাইটে এলেন?

I have not read any of his books before. This was the first one. It was well written. It was about the life of fishermen in Chittagong in the eyes of Jaladas and how he had experienced it. Details were good enough to feel the situation. Then how some of them broke the chain of sufferings and brought the shade of light was hinted. But that was not enough to finish that chain.

খুব কষ্টে শেষ করলাম জেলে সম্প্রদায়ের উপর হওয়া নিপীড়ন, অবহেলা, বৈষম্য নিয়ে লেখা আমার খুব খুব প্রিয় লেখক হরিশংকর জলদাসের 'কৈবর্তকথা'। তবে পড়ে শুধু একটা কথাই মনে হয়েছে যে কাহিনী টেনে প্রয়োজনের চেয়ে অনেক বেশী লম্বা করা হয়েছে। উনার বেশ কয়েকটি বই আগেই পড়া ছিল বলেই হয়তো হতাশার পরিমাণটাও বেশী।
