Most Christians don’t know a lot about the Old Testament or our Jewish heritage. I was fortunate that at one of our previous churches, the assistant pastor was born and raised a Jew and, as an adult, accepted Jesus. He was very active in “Jews for Jesus”. Our congregation learned a lot about the Jewish religion and the Old Testament from him. Also, I have read and studied the Old Testament some over the years, but I am still far from knowledgeable about most of it. I learned a lot while reading this book and am grateful for the opportunity to have found it.

“The One Year Holy Land Moments Devotional” is an excellent source for information and wisdom from the Jewish and the Christian perspectives. Since I was reading it for review, I read it straight through. It was very easy to read as most weeks are tied together under a topic and the content flows smoothly. I also really appreciate that there is a topical index in the back for reference so that I can use it at a later time to review some of my favorite topics. Both writers did an excellent job. Both the Jewish and the Christian perspectives are presented, as well as, their similarities and differences.

Some Christians think that the Law and the Old Testament should be disregarded since Jesus came. But Jesus said "Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill the law” (Matthew 5:17). If we are ignorant of the “law” how can we know what Jesus came to complete? To be sure, one can be saved without that knowledge, but it helps us to understand the whole picture.

Some of the things I learned while reading the book are:

“Abraham became the first person to be called a Hebrew. The word Hebrew comes from a word that means “side”. The whole world was on one side, and Abraham was on the other. The whole world believed one thing, but Abraham steadfastly believed something entirely different. Abraham’s bedrock faith in the one true God is the very foundation upon which Jews and Christians alike have built their faith traditions. His willingness to stand against the culture is a model for us all.”

“Job realized that he never really had anything to lose in the first place. Every human being enters this world with nothing and will leave with nothing. Job said the Lord has given me what I had and the Lord has taken it away. Praise the name of the Lord.” (Job 1:21

“King David wrote I have CHOSEN to be faithful; I have DETERMINED to live by your regulations.” Psalms 119:30

There are many other things I learned, but you will just have to read the book and find wonderful bits of treasure for yourself.

If you ever read devotionals and even if you don’t, I recommend this book as one you should add to your reading list.

I was provided a free copy of this book for review from Tyndale Momentum. I was under no obligation to provide a favorable review.

I was completely unprepared with how deep and profound the, "One Year Holy Land Moments Devotional" was going to be and the book definitely brings reader through a deeper walk into the Scriptures as Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein and Christian theologian ,Dr. Tremper Longman III provided complimentary views through the Scriptures.

A walk between the Jewish faith, history, and perspective and at the same time providing a Christian interpretation of beloved passages from the Scripture, the book, "One Year Holy Land Moments Devotional" serves as a way to bring a deeper understanding of the background of the Jewish faith and while at the same time, strengthening the walk of the Christian faith.

The cover of the book is gorgeous and the hardbound copy makes a beautiful edition to the home while bringing to the readers an opportunity to explore both the Jewish and Christian faith.

The writing not only brings beautiful illustrations and insights, but for the layman, it's not written in a way that is wordy nor are the writings toned down. Instead, both Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein and Christian theologian, Dr. Tremper Longman III, bring to the book, their passions and expertise to create a book that brings to each day, new discovery, understanding and encouragement to the reader.

"One Year Holy Land Moments Devotional" isn't about deep theological discussions or comparisons or contrasts, but instead serves as a "basic" introduction to both sides of the view of both the Old Testament and even in thoughts about the New Testament, to help bring some basic knowledge of both faiths to the reader while also providing the reader with encouragement through the year.

What the book does do, is bring a unique look at both the Jewish and Christian faith from experts who seek to open a deeper understanding of the Bible and its unique history and hopefully in the process, though what is shared is very basic, enough to garner discussions and interest in both the Jewish and Christian faith.

Separated into 52 weeks, with six days of devotions and on the seventh day, a Sabbath Reflection, the book challenges people to approach God in a unique manner that would be challenging to those who follow either the Jewish faith or the Christian faith, while providing an understanding of how both view passages from, the Old Testament, as an example.

Again, "One Year Holy Land Moments Devotional" is not for deep theological reading on the differences or comparison of the faith and clearly not designed for that, but instead, is designed to challenged and encouraged readers to not only read the Bible and understand it from its historical backgrounds and the influences of the time that it was written and bring a more deeper understanding, in some cases, of the descriptions of the Jewish faith that is shared throughout the Holy Bible.

If you are looking to start the New Year with a challenging and unique look at the Bible and with God, "One Year Holy Land Moments Devotional", is a book that is worth taking the time to add to one's Bible reading.

The devotionals in this book are written by a Jewish rabbi, then followed by a short response from a Christian scholar. I enjoyed learning about the Jewish perspective and teachings about the first five books of the Old Testament, the Torah. As a Christian, it is easy to forget that Jesus was Jewish, and to read 312 devotionals that emphasize His Jewish heritage, beliefs, and culture was a worthwhile endeavor.

This devotional takes a turn from the standard expectations one would have. What, precisely, is that? This edition isn't by Christians for Christians. One of the primary contributors to this devotion is an Orthodox Jew, which is precisely what attracted me to it in the first place. The devotions found in this book, designed to guide the reader through a year of reading, are based off Rabbi Eckstein's radio broadcasts, called Holy Land Moments, which are currently broadcasted on over one thousand radio outlets. That's five continents, with over nine million listeners.

The material of this devotional are tied to Rabbi Eckstein's teachings on the Jewish faith and tradition. It's, essentially, a catalogued history of the Jewish people and current issues facing Israel today. Rabbi Eckstein has worked hard to bring a Jewish perspective for Christians to read and learn from, accompanied by Dr. Longman's scholarly experience teaching the Old Testament. The goal of this collaboration is to help educate and mend broken fences to help create a stronger identity for Jews and Christians alike.

This devotion strives to guide a reader through a Gregorian calendar year, while recognizing Jewish feasts and festivals. In this regard, it is important to begin at the right time, or fast-forward to where one should be in the year. The voice of the devotional is very encouraging, much like traditional studies, but one can see the Jewish influence as well.

Overall, I would have liked a bit more of a challenge, but that would make this a study instead of a devotional. Otherwise, marking the days to read as actual dates would have been helpful as well, as Week 1 / Day 7 requires a bit of math to get to where one wants to be to follow the Jewish calendar in the devotional. That said, the material is unique and greatly illuminates aspects of the Jewish life and traditions that I have struggled to discover on my own for quite some time now. This book would have greatly helped in that pursuit.

This devotional is a great starting primer on getting to know how Jewish Y'shua really is, but believers shouldn't stop there. Consider this the first stepping stone on a pathway across the pond, shall we?

I've been looking for a devotional that will give a better insight into Israel- their history, and mentality. we judge people so easily for their decisions, but we dont know what stays behind that decision, what they think, what motivates them, what unbendable principles they hold.
this devotional is best in showing what makes Jewish people function and what we have in common with them . it gives you that link that we need in connecting with them for we have the same God and the same Savior- Jesus.
Very inspiring, informative and full bucket of cold water of truth and reality. we are called to love God's people and pray for them. you cant do that if you dont know them.
