Reckoning at Harts Pass

Rate this book
Retired FBI agent, Luke Chamberlin, is hiking the Pacific Crest Trail to free himself from feelings of doubt about his past career, his shaky marriage, and the person he's become. Part way up the trail, an urgent message from a stranger indicates that trouble lies ahead near the border with Canada. Setting aside his unwillingness to get involved, Luke puts together a renegade team of law enforcement officers to check out the northern border--armed with firepower, determination, and a tomahawk. At Harts Pass, high in the Cascades, the team finds more than they bargained for at a charred campsite. They organize a plan to stop a group of would-terrorists aiming to wreak havoc on the West Coast. But not before Luke puts the operation, and everything he stands for, in jeopardy. Set in the magnificent wilderness of the Pacific mountains, Reckoning At Harts Pass is a riveting tale of courage, revelation, and redemption.

I received a free copy of this book from Goodreads and I really enjoyed it! I had a hard time putting it down before I went to bed as this is when I do the most reading. It flows well and the characters are well thought-out. I would certainly like to see another book with the main character Luke Chamberlin as the main FBI agent again-- retired unless he decides to get back into the game~! I enjoyed reading about the Cascades area in the Northwest Pacific as my daughter has recently moved to the state of Washington and loves it there! I have never been there so this book reinforced my wanting to go visit the area! Would like to see more from this author on Luke's family and what happens with his wife also. Also I found the references to Native American customs very intriguing and would like to read more on that with possible updates about Luke in coming books! I also appreciated the handwritten note that I received from this author when I got this book in the mail. I am sorry it took me so long to write the review but was really busy this summer!Thank you again to Elizabeth Macalaster and hope to hear updates from her on these characters and this area of the country, as-well- as traditions and legends from the "Chamberlin" family!

As a hiker, I was quickly drawn in to appreciate the life of the protagonist of this book, a retired FBI agent hiking the Pacific Coast trail. Because the author is married to an FBI agent, she has an insider's knowledge of internal operations that makes the anti-terrorist/law enforcement aspects of the book vivid and credible. What surprised me, however, was that her scenes in Pakistan sprang to life as though she had lived there many years. The characters are appealing and multi-dimensional. The story builds steadily to a rousing climax. I enjoyed the book thoroughly and I hope the author will write a sequel.

If you are into hiking and detective stories this is the book for you. The author did some extensive research and had a lot of facts correct. Unfortunetely I had read another review so I was sort of given a spoiler alert. It was still a Great ending. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

Reckoning at Harts Pass is an exciting thriller with a surprise ending. I knew nothing about hiking and was fascinated by the details--I learned so much about the sport and the Pacific Crest Trail. I highly recommend this book that includes believable characters, good plot, and a wilderness twist.

Great book, Elizabeth! My wife and I were in suspense throughout! ...very timely topics including terrorism, indoctrination of youth, and FBI. The visualizations of the Pacific Crest Trail and subplots were created well. Hope to see it as a movie!
