Fifty years ago, a man-made virus escaped from a laboratory, and spread throughout the world, turning half the population into human animal hybrids, known as Humebeasts. Society rules them to be dangerous, despite their intelligence and nature proven to be no more threatening or superior to their human counterparts.
Seventeen-year-old Humebeast Ziggy Coils wants to be a musician more than anything. The caretakers at his foster home always loved his voice, and music is the only thing that can calm his panic attacks. But now he lives with his violent ex-con father who can’t see past the vodka bottle, his school only teaches him how to fight, and his reptilian claws mean that he can’t even pick up a fork. Forget playing an instrument.
Across town, twenty-something Frankie spends his nights keeping drunk troublemakers in line at a bar. His haunted past troubles him, but he finds peace by playing his bass guitar.
When Frankie and Ziggy meet each other, there’s no love between them, but the music they play together soars. Finally, along with a drummer and a guitarist, they can imagine a future.
But at one of their live gigs, someone watches them from the shadows, waiting for the band to make it big. Waiting to finally have a chance at revenge.
As Frankie and Ziggy are pulled into an underworld of murder and rebellion, they must decide if their dream of becoming successful musicians, adored by all, is worth the violence that’s broiling around them – even as their own animal instincts brew beneath the surface.
Humebeasts: Lizard Ambition by Lisa Munoz is an interesting take on the coming-of-age story for young adults within a dystopian setting. I personally loved this novel. I was initially intrigued by the blurb but as soon as I started reading I was hooked. Ziggy is our main protagonist who, despite being a Humebeast – one of those infected by a man made virus that turned some into human animal hybrids, dreams of being a musician. We follow him through his journey and along the way he meets Frankie, initially they care little for each other but their music is worth putting up with each other.
Now we know I don’t like spoilers but what I will say is that Munoz as created a brilliant alternative world with characters that are well crafted and fleshed out. At the heart of the story is the idea of acceptance and coming to accept yourself even if the world might not want to accept you. It’s a powerful massage aided by how human Ziggy is. We get to really know him and his desires and it makes the reader stop and think that so many people could be just like Ziggy, while they may not appear what is considered ‘normal’ or ‘preferable’ by society they are still very much human with wants, desires and feelings. Tied to this though is a pacy and action packed plot that keeps you hooked till the end. We have violence, unrest and complex politics between the humans and humebeasts.
In short Humebeasts is a beautiful novel that considers identity, race, discrimination and the prejudice in society. While this is set in an alternative world this novel raises questions we can apply to our own society and focuses on how we should look at what can bring us together and unite us rather than our differences. A Brilliant novel for those who enjoy dystopian and novels with a slight humanist narrative blended into a well developed plot with memorable and well developed characters.

" [...] It’s not our fault we are what we are. [...]".
"Humebeasts: Lizard Ambition" is the literary debut of Lisa Munoz. Her novel is Science fiction for young adults. In her work, the author touches on important topics including revenge, mistreatment of other people, friendship and discovering the true self. Forty-nine years ago, the world was struck by a plague, which led to the creation of Humebeast - People with animal characteristics. Humans do not tolerate chimeras and attack them. The characters in this novel undergo a huge metamorphosis. You will learn, among other things: Ziggy Coils- This character is seventeen years old, has reptilian claws covered with black scales and has clawed feet. His head is also unusual. He grew up in an orphanage. He loves listening to music on headphones, it calms him down. He lives on the outskirts of London. He is a Humebeast - a chimera. His favourite singer is David Slade. This hero loves to sing. Will someone help his career? Will he fulfil his dream and become a singer? It is worth knowing its history. Will our hero find his way in a world full of barbarians? Just because someone is different doesn't mean they are worse. Samuel Clarke - he is a talent scout, former DJ. Will he turn out to be a friend of our main character? Or will he mock him at every turn? The story of this hero moved me deeply. It's worth getting to know this character. Arnold - Ziggie's biological father. He is terribly aggressive towards his son. I didn't like this character. Dominic O'Riley - is a rock guitarist. He has ultra-religious parents. He's gay. His parents don't know anything about it, and if they found out, they would probably disown their son. And that would be their big mistake. He is also a Humebeasts. Of course, you will meet many other characters in the book "Humebeasts: Lizard Ambition". Some you will like, others you will hate. I really liked this whole story. I read it in one day. This book evoked a lot of different emotions in me. Sometimes I was very scared. I feared for the lives of Ziggie and his friends. This hero made me realize that it's worth giving others a second chance. Even though this book is aimed at teenagers aged 14-18, I had fun reading it too. I wonder if I will hear about the characters in this novel again. The author writes in a language understandable to today's youth. This novel is worth recommending. In my opinion, "Humebeasts: Lizard Ambition" is a successful debut.
With Humebeasts: Lizard Ambition, Muñoz creates a world fifty years into the future after a catastrophic global pandemic-level virus (named Chimera that has combined human DNA with animal DNA) caused mass deaths and essentially an unexpected shift throughout the human society. Based in London, the novel follows Ziggy Coils, a humebeast or chimera person, with reptilian claws and features throughout his body and initially, the reader is immersed into one of his recurring panic attacks. Through this immediate tension, Muñoz sets the tone of the seriousness of the novel. Ziggy’s challenges include an abusive and negligent father, pressure to a pursue a career that doesn’t interest him and the marginalization of humebeasts, like him. And in spite of these obstacles and lack of support, Ziggy dreams of being a famous singer. As the plot pushes forward, it is frustrating to root for Ziggy because he is impulsive, insensitive and easily angered. This behavior causes a rift between him and multiple characters despite Muñoz’s ability to convey his good intentions. It is through the kinship he finds with his bandmates and other characters that Muñoz creates such a beautiful and authentic character development in Ziggy.
I really enjoyed reading this novel from start to finish because Muñoz has such a holistic way of weaving the characters’ stories together seamlessly and has such a skill for creating whole, complex characters who were relatable. The three themes that I detected from the novel were activism, queer kinship and the power of music. And the three of these themes were presented well throughout various plot twists and turns. However, one criticism that I had when reading the novel was that not all of the scenes were believable. Despite this being a speculative fiction novel, the gravity of violence and mental illness anchored a lot of the plot to the happenings of the reader’s world. With that being said, there were some scenes strayed away from the capabilities of the characters and their experiences.
Otherwise, I would definitely recommend that you pick up this gem because it sends its reader on an unexpected ride that leads into an inspiring story about the underdog.
Humebeasts is an astounding dystopian science fiction book for youthful grown-ups by Lisa Munoz. The author discusses a man-made virus that spread around the world 50 years ago by escaping from a laboratory. In this narrative, this virus has transformed the population of the world into humebeasts, hybrid humans and animals. The story follows Ziggy Coils, a 17-year-old boy whose passion is music. Ziggy's challenges, including the limitations imposed by his reptilian claws, as he copes with his alcoholic and violent father, are expertly portrayed by the author. His former sanctuary, the foster home, has been replaced by a harsh reality where his aspirations to become a musician seem unattainable. Frankie, who is troubled by his own past, finds some measure of solace in music. When these two characters first meet, their initial hostility changes into something extraordinary when they realize they have a similar musical talent. The ability of music to break down barriers and mend wounds is at the center of the narrative. Ziggy and Frankie set out on a journey of self-discovery and rebellion against a society that considers them to be less than human through their band. A mysterious figure is hiding in the shadows, waiting for the ideal opportunity to exact revenge as they gain fame. Lisa Munoz combines elements of dystopia, music, and suspense to create an engaging narrative. Ziggy and Frankie are relatable protagonists and have well-developed characters. The creator deftly investigates topics of personality, acknowledgment, and the battle for imaginative appearance notwithstanding misfortune. " Humebeasts: Reptile Desire" is an enthralling perused that will engage fanatics of tragic fiction, music devotees, and any individual who partakes in a mix of activity, interest, and profound profundity. Munoz's narrating ability radiates through, making a world that feels both recognizable and particularly exceptional. Plan to be cleared away by the music, the pressure, and the untamed aspirations that abide inside the hearts of the Humebeasts.
Humebeasts by Lisa Munoz is an enthralling coming-of-age story that dives deep into the struggles and triumphs of Ziggy, a seventeen-year-old Humebeast struggling with anxiety and a sense of inadequacy. The book took me on an emotional rollercoaster as Ziggy navigates the complexities of being a unique individual in a society that often undervalues and misunderstands those who are different. The story follows Ziggy's journey as he faces the demons of his past, grapples with his troubled relationship with his father, and discovers the true power of embracing his individuality.
Ziggy's determination to pursue his dreams of becoming a singer despite the challenges he faces is truly inspiring. Munoz's skillful storytelling allowed me to feel every triumph and setback, making for a truly immersive reading experience. The supporting characters add depth and complexity to the story. Ziggy's mentor, Sam, plays a significant role in his growth and development, offering much-needed guidance and support. The bandmates, Dominic, Rick, and Mikkealla, each bring their unique perspectives, struggles, and talents, contributing to the overall richness of the narrative.
My favorite part of the book is the portrayal of Ziggy's inner turmoil and his struggle to find acceptance in a world that often marginalizes Humebeasts. The exploration of anxiety and the emotional turmoil Ziggy faces make him relatable, and it’s easy to be emotionally invested in his journey of self-discovery.
Overall, this is a compelling and impactful read. Humebeasts is not only entertaining, but it also leaves me contemplating the complexities of the human condition and the importance of empathy and understanding. It is a must-read for fans of coming-of-age and dystopian stories.

3.5🌟 Humebeasts is a coming of age story about fitting in in a world where you don't fit in. I thought that the premise for the story was very clever, and the idea of a man made virus creating a new species of chimera to be fairly unique.
The book touches on subjects such as mental health, the healing power of music, and the friends who become family. There was also a narrative about racism, albeit a made up race of Chimera and how they are perceived by society. Also how we csn sometimes assume that our struggles are harder than someone elses. When in fact everyone's struggles are valid, whether the other person appears privileged to you or not.
I loved Dominic! Partly because he's called Dominic (like my son) I just wanted to hug Ziggy. The cast of characters was diverse and interesting. They were all very well written.
The writing was fairly simply and easy to read. Setting it in London and using known musicians as references make it feel more real, and for me easier to follow. I find some fantasy/sci-fi writers are so keen to create an exciting world that my brain can't process all the made up words and I lose track. That wasn't an issue here.
Review - I'm not a big fan of sci-fi books buu I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this one. I think the main reason why I liked it was because it was more like a thriller to me. It was fast paced, suspenseful and I just wanted to keep listening to find out what was going to happen.
The story follows seventeen-year-old Ziggy Coils who wants to be a musician and it is the only thing that can calm his panic attacks. Frankie and Ziggy meet each other, the music they play together soars. Finally, along with a drummer and a guitarist they can imagine a future. But someone is watching them from the shadows and waiting to have a chance at revenge!
The cover page and the premise of the book really drew me in. It sounded like something I had never read before, which I was right about. There was so much action throughout. The pacing never slowed or dragged. It has some incredible world building in it. Overall, a great book by Lisa Munoz! I look forward to reading more of her books and really recommend this one to any YA Sci-fi lovers. This one will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Humebeasts: Lizard Ambition is a captivating and gritty novel recommended for those seeking an imaginative and unique experience. Set in a post-virus urban fantasy world, individuals affected by 'chimaera' inherit part-animal traits, leading to societal divisions. Great first novel by Lisa Muñoz which will appeal to young adults. Although it is a sci-fi book we can really relate to it after the world was hit by Covid, as it tells the tale of a pandemic which hit the world 50 years earlier and transformed humans into humebeasts! Lots of excellent graphic descriptions of the various characters. The main character Ziggy has had a difficult childhood and dreams of making a career in music, much to his abusive father's disdain. We are taken on Ziggy's journey throughout the book, from meeting his mentor Samuel Clarke, to forming a band. His epic journey, struggles with mental health, experiences with friends and enemies along the way, make for a gripping read. Looking forward to the sequel!
