Poetry anthologies, especially those intending to present a language's or a country's greatest works - or even just the "exemplary out of the works worthy of being preserved", as the intention is described in this book, is always very much a brainchild of its time and of its editor. This collection here, stemming from the 1950s, looks very dated now, and should be presented as "German religious poetry through the ages" rather than "The German poem" ("Das deutsche Gedicht"), as it is.
Though the selection looks very monothematic from nowadays' point of view, it certainly does contain works of the masters and masterpieces of some minor poets. Especially towards the end I found some poems that I should revisit time and again, like Rainer Maria Rilke's Solang du Selbstgeworfnes fängst or Rudolf Alexander Schröder's Ballade vom Wandersmann.
