Eilis Flynn has spent a large share of her life working on Wall Street or in a Wall Street-related firm, so why should she write fiction that's any less based in our world? She spends her days aware that there is a reality beyond what we can see - and tells stories about it for Cerridwen Press. Published in other genres, she lives in verdant Washington state with her equally fantastical husband and spoiled rotten cats.
Ms. Flynn and Ms. Hiestand have woven an interesting tale of intrigue, very James Bondish in a Steam Punk sort of way. This is my second steam punk book. I found it much more intriguing than the first, written by another author. The descriptions and visual images the writing drew forth from my imagination along with the development of these new characters gave this first installment in St. George Protector Society a great beginning. I love how these authors have worked together to weave a fantastical tale that leads through the under grounds of London. Murder, theft, vampires, and a very well crafted mystery all unfold as you find yourself drawn into the late 1800s. I kept chuckling every time Prince Albert’s name came up, thinking about the joke my grandfather used to tell. Happy memories and a good book, what more could anyone want? I’m already trying to figure out if the assassin Nellie and vampire Lucas will have a little romance brewing as the series continues. I guess you could say I’m hooked, because I’m going to be waiting for the next installment of their adventures.
Wear Black is a different sort of Vampire story that is heavily grounded in Steampunk technology.
Lucas Fitzrobbins attempts to aid a woman who is under attack and wakes up dead. As he tries to adjust to his new life, he begins to understand a few things more clearly, including who ordered his death and who may have posession of the German's precious crown.
Wear Black is a vampire tale based in the late 1800's. This is a very interesting tale about Lucas Fitzrobbins as he adjust to his new life as a vampire in the St. George Society. A whole new world is opened up to him and he must figure out how to adjust without going insane or being targeted by the An Tighearn. Lucas find himself in the middle of a stolen crown issue and a killer on the lose. Lucas finds himself both questioning the society and falling for his enemy Nellie Clifton. Will he find the thief and capture the crazy killer? Or will he find that some deceptions are to big to handle?
I found myself intrigued by the society and questioning the cause and the people in it. Could it be everything that it is supposed to be or are underhanded things going on? I also loved the interactions between Nellie and Lucas. I would have really liked more of those as their back and forth was flirty. I struggled with understanding how easy it was for him at first to take blood from humans even if they are not the highest in society and he didn't seem to have an issue stopping. The number of times a day seemed to be extreme. How do they stay alive with such a lack of blood?
I did like this book but wished there had been more time between Nellie and Lucas. Maybe that will come in the next book?
WOW, fantastic new light on vampires, I'll definitely take a different look at Oolong tea, the way they were described was more human like then some of the other books I have read. Worth reading more than once, never know what you might have missed by reading too fast. Worth absorbing the speed of change. Glad to have had the chance to read, will pass this to friends who love this type of genre.
