Me and My Cat

Rate this book
Every cat owner believes that his or her cat understands them. Every cat owner believes that cats are far more intelligent than dogs—they’re just too cool to show it. Every cat owner believes that their cat should be starring in TV commercials. Every cat owner, in short, is a cat lover.
If you’re not a cat lover when the cat first comes along—you don’t purchase a cat, they choose to live with you—then you will be within a very short space of time. There are stories, of course, that every cat owner loves to tell. It may be how the cat comforted them on the day a relative died unexpectedly. It may be about how the cat stares down urban foxes in the garden. It may be a story of the cat’s escapades, or how it got stuck up a tree. It may simply be a story about how the cat is a loving companion.

From editor Carmel Reilly—author of numerous collections of inspirational stories including True Tales of Angel Encounters—comes this delightful anthology of tales about beloved cats and the joy they bring to human lives. Each story is a different cat owner’s tribute to his or her favorite feline, and each falls into a special category, from Cats with Attitude to Kitten Escapades, from Magical Cats to tales about Cats’ Nine Lives. You’ll read about cats that ward off unwanted visitors, cats that hoard silver jewelry, and cats that get stuck in tubs of yogurt. Accompanied by twenty-five charming illustrations and told with warmth, humor, and affection, Me and My Cat is an ideal gift for the cat lover in your life, and a perfect book to curl up with next to a furry friend.

This is a lovely book, full of anecdotes about people and their cats. None of the stories takes up more than two pages, so it makes for a good 'pick up and put down' book - I read the majority of it during my lunch breaks at work. Every cat owner will find a story in here that reminds them of their cat, but I bet there are a few that will surprise, too!

I am a long-time cat owner and currently have three of the little beasts. I’m also part of the Cat Distribution System, having acquired half my cats as strays who have ended up in my yard over the years. Others have been adopted from the humane society or cat rescues. With this in mind, the stories in this book really hit home. I enjoyed most of them, and I commend the author for putting together this collection.

I was surprised by the different ways people acquired their cats. I personally think cats check out a place before deciding they want to live there. Just a feeling. I liked the mix of stories from different time frames, some are from new cat owners, while others were remembering childhood pets. And everything in between.

I had the electronic version and there were a couple of stories which were missing the final few words. It wasn’t a big deal, but it was annoying and sloppy. I also think more thought could have been put into categorizing the stories in a better order, perhaps leading up to a climax for each section.

Overall, I enjoyed the book. I did think the stories were more on the commonplace side, as I have a few stories that are just as interesting. However, I did find it an enjoyable read, and I give it four of five stars on Goodreads.

I love cats. I love all animals really but I especially love cats. It’s one thing everyone knows about me so, of course, every year in the office Secret Santa I get something cat related.

We haven’t had Secret Santa since the 2019 because of the pandemic but in 2019 I was given this book along with a few cat themed trinkets (a mug, a jewellery dish, and a little “home is where the cat is” sign). I’ve put off finishing the book, taking it up and reading the stories over and over all but the last one because I didn’t want the book to be over. These stories are truly heartwarming. It’s so lovely to read about how loved each of these cats were and how loved their humans were in return.

It’s the perfect comforting, cosy, Sunday morning book to read with the sun pouring in the window, a cat on your lap, and a mug of coffee in your hand. I would recommend it to cat lovers everywhere.

I liked this collection of cute and quirky cat anecdotes. It made me realise my own cats are not so weird after all! All cat lovers should enjoy this one.

nice little stories but I prefer longer more in depth accounts, still a nice book for bus or train journeys.
