Rate this book

The Hizb Al-Bahr or the Litany of the Sea is a popular invocation in the Shadhili spiritual order. It was directly related from Imam Abul Hasan Ash-Shadhili (RA) to his Murids. It is so popular that many Sufi orders have appropriated it into their daily invocations. The preface has the following to say about it: "The Hizb Al-Bahr itself consists mostly of Quranic verses and Prophetic verses to be found in the various authentic collection of hadith. It is clear that it has found acceptance in the Ummah due to huge popularity that it has achieved. But the Shadhili Shaykhs are keen to point out that the Hizb Al-Bahr, 'is not a magic wand, but an expression of slavehood and poverty.'"

This Hizb was given to the Imam in a special way. On his way to perform the ritual pilgrimage in Makkah, the Imam boarded a ship seeking passage to the Holy City from Cairo. The ship was captained by a man and he was accompanied by his brother and elderly father of whom were Christian, and there were other pilgrims seeking safe passage to Makkah as well. On their journey, they suffered poor winds and were stranded on open waters for a week or more, causing them to fear out of missing their Hajj. One mid-day the Imam was sleeping and had a dream where he was taught this litany by the Prophet (SAW), word for word. Upon waking, he recited the litany and requested the captain to unfurl the sails. Not a moment sooner did the winds pick up and guide them on their way to Makkah. Soon after the man, his brother, and elderly father all professed their faith in Islam. All of them remarking the saintliness and blessedness of the Imam, and professing the protection and blessing upon him by Allah. It is since this event, the Imam has passed down this invocation to be recited for all its benefits including for protection, safe passage, and victory by Almighty Allah.

The concluding sections at the end of the book are very beneficial to those who have taken a Tariqah with a pious Shaykh. It must be said that even after reading this book, one likely would not attain understanding of this Hizb except by a Shaykh who has ijazah to teach it and the meanings behind it.
