A Companion WORKBOOK to Today's Most Widely Used Textbook for Learning to Interpret and Understand the Bible
Grasping God's Word has proven itself in classrooms across the country as an invaluable help to students who want to learn how to read, interpret, and apply the Bible for themselves. This WORKBOOK is designed for use alongside the fourth edition of the textbook Grasping God's Word. While the textbook shows you the principles and tools of interpretation, the WORKBOOK lets you try them out by applying them to specific genres and contexts. Together, these books will help you get a grip on the solid rock of Scripture--how to read it, how to interpret it, and how to apply it.
Filling the gap between approaches that are too simple and others that are too technical, this book starts by equipping readers with general principles of interpretation, then moves on to apply those principles to specific genres and contexts. Features include:
Proven in classrooms across the country Hands-on exercises to guide students through the interpretation process Emphasis on real-life application Supplemented by a website for professors providing extensive teaching materials Updates corresponding to the fourth edition of the textbook, including new exercises Accompanying textbook, video lectures, laminated study guide (sold separately) When used alongside the textbook, this workbook is the ideal resource for anyone looking for a hands-on step-by-step guide that will teach them how to accurately and faithfully interpret the Bible.
J. Scott Duvall (PhD. Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary) is professor of New Testament at Ouachita Baptist University. He is the coauthor with George H. Guthrie of Biblical Greek Exegesis: A Graded Approach to Learning Intermediate and Advanced Greek and with Terry G. Carter and J. Daniel Hays of the textbook Preaching God's Word: A Hands on Approach to Preparing, Developing and Delivering the Sermon.
Great book for learning about the proper approach to Bible observation, interpretation and application. I had to read this for a class in college by I really enjoyed it. The 5 step process for bible study and application is simple and helpful for personal use as well as teaching. Duvall and Hays do a splendid job of explaining preconceived notions of the reader, genres of the bible, and the proper approach to finding the authors meaning in the text among other things. I would highly recommend this book for anyone with a desire to grow in their ability to understand and apply biblical truth, whether a greenhorn or veteran when it comes to bible study.
My 3 star review is not my review of the book, it is excellent. I’ve used editions 1,2,3 and 4 arrives in a couple of weeks. I will use the book but not this workbook. I think it is too much. If it were half the size, it would be more useful. There are great assignment ideas that I will use but not enough to justify the whole book. If you are teaching hermeneutics, get this workbook but don’t make your students buy it.
I read the latest version and it is incredible. Though very basic, it gives an overview of how to interpret, read and use the bible in an appropriate manner.
It is helpful with language use, translations and the context scripture was written in.
It is simple and would recommend to anyone who finds biblical studies of interest.
