This book highlights two contrasting trajectories of asserting collective identities under settler colonialism. The account traces South African reserve policies and autochthonous responses from 1915, and looks at the material bases as well as on the experiences and traditions of dealing with the colonial challenge by resistance or accommodation. The book also casts light on the beginnings and subsequent course of the national liberation struggle specifically in southern Namibia under the conditions of South African homeland policy. Glimpses of the situation during the first years of independence point to the persistent difficulty of reconciling communal aspirations within the modern state. Reinhart K?ler is adjunct professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Mnster. He has published widely on southern Africa and Namibia in particular, on globalization and world society, on theory of development, social theory and methodology, political sociology and the culture of work and time.
