This edited collection uses a history of economic thought perspective to explore the evolving role of Latin America within the context of globalization. In particular, it examines the region’s resilience in the face of the global financial crisis. Economic Development and Global Crisis explains that Latin America is a region with distinct characteristics and peculiarities which have been shaped from the colonial era up to the present day. The contributions suggest that several features which were perceived as economic backwardness have turned out to be advantageous, and this may explain why Latin America is withstanding the crisis much better than Europe, Japan and the USA. This book will be of interest to scholars working in the areas of economic development, economic history, the history of economic thought and Latin American studies.

About the author

JOSÉ LUÍS CARDOSO nasceu na Figueira da Foz, em 10 de Março de 1956. É licenciado em Economia pelo ISEG-UTL e em Sociologia pelo ISCTE, doutorado e agregado em Economia (ISEG-UTL), onde foi professor catedrático até 2008. É investigador coordenador do Instituto de Ciências Sociais da Universidade de Lisboa, o qual dirigiu. Tem vasta obra publicada sobre temas de história do pensamento económico português em perspectiva comparada e é autor de diversos ensaios de história política, económica e intelectual sobre o período final do absolutismo e génese do liberalismo em Portugal. Coordenou a colecção Obras Clássicas do Pensamento Económico Português (20 obras em 30 volumes), publicadas pelo Banco de Portugal entre 1990-1998. Foi Presidente da European Society for the History of Economic Thought (2014-2016) e co-fundador das revistas The European Journal of the History of Economic Thought e E-Journal of Portuguese History. É membro da Network for Studies on Corporatism and the Organized Interests (NETCOR), sócio efectivo da Academia das Ciências de Lisboa. Coordena o projecto O Banco de Lisboa e a Revolução Liberal de 1820, financiado pelo Banco de Portugal, e tem em preparação a edição crítica dos Escritos Políticos e Discursos Parlamentares (1820-1822) de Manuel Fernandes Tomás.
