How to Make A Winning College Application Video Essay: Everything You Need to Know, From Idea to Upload

What is a college application video essay?

It's the newest way to tell a college about yourself - an optional one or two minute video you submit with your application, which may be the unique, special element that helps land you on the "yes" pile.

In the increasingly competitive admissions crush, it's another chance to make your voice heard above the college apps cacophony, to give schools something more than grades, scores and written essays. Whether solicited by your college, or added as an extra supplement, a video essay will provide the Admissions Committee one more opportunity to see who you are.

Even if you've never shot a frame of footage, this book will tell you everything you need to know about how to make a compelling, dynamic college video, from concept to filming, editing, scoring and uploading to YouTube. Included are links to some of today's standout college videos.

Max Kiefer and Rosa Wolfe are a husband-wife writing and filmmaking team, graduates of Yale and Columbia. Both of their children made college application videos, and both got into their top choice universities.

The book is wonderfully easy to read but full of great advice.

The chapters are organized like a series of pep talks with lots of clear, easy-to-follow tips. I especially liked the links to actual admissions videos kids have created, which Max, the author/dad intersperses throughout the book, and which he uses to illustrate both the technical and editorial points he makes. I read it on my ipad, but if you wanted to read it in hard copy, Max gives you search terms you canuse on google.

If you are a kid headed for college in a few years, or the parent of one (as I am), check out this book. Even if you don't make an admission video, it's a great way to find out what all the fuss is about and see lots of excellent examples of admission videos.

As the mother of a junior in high school, I found this book to be incredibly helpful! Anything to differential yourself from the "pack" can create that tipping point. Because the generation going to college now is so fluid with and in front of a video camera, it makes total sense. I mentioned this book to a college advisor at a large meeting and he whole heartily endorsed the concept of video interviewing - although, had I not brought it up, it never would have been mentioned to the 100 parents in attendance. Looking for an edge? This may just be the ticket to the college or university of your dreams!
