People revered Saint Hildegard von Bingen, German nun, composer, and a visionary, during her own lifetime; she set her poems to music and also wrote works on medicine and natural history.

People also knew this philosopher, Christian mystic, Benedictine abbess, and polymath as Sibyl of the Rhine. Her fellows elected her as a magistra in 1136; she founded the monasteries of Rupertsberg in 1150 and Eibingen in 1165. The Ordo Virtutum exemplifies early liturgical drama.

Her theological and botanical texts, letters, liturgical songs, and arguably the oldest morality play, well survive; she meanwhile supervised brilliant miniature Illuminations.

Šķiet, bez konteksta šī luga man neko nenozīmētu. Iztēlojoties, ka šo raksta vīziju mocīta sieviete, es redzu tālāk par kristīgo ievirzi. Jauka 30min lasāmvieliņa.

“Tikumi:
Gribam tevi atpakaļ vest,
negribam tevi pamest,
un viss debesu karapulks par tevi līksmo -
tāpēc mums visām jāskan mūzikā.”

I’m not super religious so I acknowledge that this play does not hold the same value to me as others. I think the musical accompaniment definitely enhances the writing of this play and that is Hildegard’s strong point. I love that this is evidence of women artist’s from the past and it definitely establishes a precedent that paved the way for the artists of today.

As usual I am simply delighted that Goodreads, in its wisdom, wants me to rate a 1000 year old morality play on a scale from 1-5. Knowing about my girl Hildegard *almost* makes me wish I didn't give up on Latin after high school (almost).
