The Chronicles of A Diary of Hyperemesis Gravidarum is the non-fiction pregnancy journal of a woman who battled severe hyperemesis gravidarum. She endured more than a month of hospitalization, being tube-fed, and being on strict bed rest for 30 weeks. In spite of having gone through tremendous suffering, the pregnancy culminated in the birth of a healthy baby girl. Although the subject matter is serious and the tone is often sobering, there are moments of humor and untamed joy. In all, the journal serves to encourage other sufferers of hyperemesis gravidarum that they might enjoy a similar outcome.
Not many people know what Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) is, but this author certainly does. In her firsthand account of suffering from this rare pregnancy condition, Foshee-McCall is somehow able to be both brutally honest and uplifting. Not all pregnancies are full of baby showers, ethereal maternity photo shoots, or a glowing complexion. Sometimes pregnancy is a long and terrifying battle. I read this while going through a mild version of HG and couldn't put it down. Knowing someone had made it through HG at its worse gave me hope that I could do it too. I hope that other women who suffer from difficult pregnancies will all get a chance to read this book and know they're not alone.
