Paperback edition - Short humorous stories by Robb Lightfoot. Original work has appeared in The Funny Times, www.anewscafe.com, and www.orsoitseems.com
Volume has photos and 13 humorous holiday tales, of food and frivolity. Laugh at all that can go wrong on a Christmas trip, the perils of threatening Santa, and why National Fruitcake Month is the new threat from outer space.
My storytelling career began in kindergarten. Mother made a deal with Mrs. Berry, my teacher. "Don't believe what he says happens at home and I won't believe what he says happens at school."
In first grade, I spent much of my time in the principal's office. Poor Mr. Lewis tried to convey the finer points of classroom etiquette... wait until you're called upon was his main message. But there's always so much to talk about! Today, in addition to writing, I get paid to talk--I teach speech, debate and literature-in-performance.
My first paid writing gig was as a reporter at The Bakersfield Californian, and I learned to write under deadline pressure. I was lucky enough to get coaching from editors of the New Journalism school that favored colorful, crisp writing. After a few years, though, I decided a job with more regular hours was better suited to the demands of raising a family. I made it into the classroom by way of Public Relations and master's in speech communication. My thesis was stories to see how credible they were. Odd, isn't it. The main theme of our adult lives can often be seen in our earliest days.
My books range from my humorous science-fiction based series and paranormal mysteries to my personal stories which are "sorta-was" tall tales. I also have a volume of cautionary career advice
When I'm not writing books or posting on the web I'm crafting screenplays.
Take a walk down memory lane and end up in the present with Robb Lightfoot in these fun short stories. I found myself smiling and nodding in recognition to reminders of days gone by, especially the reference to the World Book Encyclopedia and the ubiquitous yearbooks that just keep coming and keep coming . . . . .
My favorite was the story about the proprietress of Deercreek Thrift who was more of a 'geriatric gargoyle' jealously guarding her wares. No one pulls the wool over this old lady's eyes. No siree, Bob! The story about fruitcake and the sinister implications it brings with it was fun, and the title story was charming.
It was an extremely quick read, I would have liked for it to have contained more stories. This was a Goodreads first-reads giveaway, thank you.
This book is a collection of short stories, some more interrelated than others. As long as you don't go into the book expecting them all to be woven together neatly it's a very enjoyable and quick read.
There were some problems on the editing front (a mis-placed word or punctuation mark here and there), but it did not detract from the experience of reading.
The author has a strong voice, a clear point of view, and a lovely feeling of whimsy in his style. I could have gone on to read many more short stories had they been included. I felt each story had a clear trajectory, and each was pleasant to read.
The only element I probably wouldn't read again was the poem he included. It wasn't bad, but I didn't find it up to the level of the rest of the work included.
This was a book I received as a First Reads winner. I thought the tone of this book was the tiniest bit reminiscent of the movie "The Christmas Story" (about the kid who wanted a Red Rider BB gun,) only in the respect that it tried to recall humorous family situations at Christmas. But the book seemed convoluted and didn't flow well. As much as I expected and wanted to enjoy this book, I did not.
What a fun little book. I won it through a giveaway and received an autographed copy soon thereafter.
Lightfoot is a talented storyteller and brought back a lot of childhood memories. I particularly related to holding up signs in the back of the station wagon for the drivers of the cars behind us while traveling with my family.
Robb Lightfoot has a gift for nostalgic storytelling. Witty and often mischievous stories filled with warmth and heart, thanks for a great read. I look forward to reading more.
This was such a cute book. It was easy to read with a lot of laughs. My favorite chapters were the letters to Santa and the Fruitcake. Everyone should enjoy reading this book.
