THOUGHTS: Jill Marie Denton writes a tough, no nonesense badassery in her main character, in Girl Alt Delete, a brilliant computer wiz and hacker protecting those who has saved her from her past. The story started in neck break speed and doesn’t let up. I enjoyed that in this book and that ending was incredible. I love a great cat and mouse chase that involves cybercrime, hacking, espionage, and many more.

This was a fun one!

Her fingers flew furiously over the keys as she dug deeper into cyberspace. Screens flashed before her eyes as she scanned document after document trying to find the person eluding her. She was close. She could sense it.

Girl Alt Delete follows Lizzie, a hacker and computer wizard. She’s trying to track down the most notorious hacker on the planet, but finds herself in much deeper trouble than she expected.

I was immediately intrigued when I picked this book up, fascinated by the thought of a hacker tracking down another hacker. I also enjoyed the storyline of these computer geniuses tracking down criminal behavior and exposing shady businesses and corrupt people. Now, with that being said… I wish this book would have focused more on that stuff, but it took a lot of turns into things in Lizzie’s life instead (such as her many trysts with men and women). It also constantly jumped timelines, flashing into different parts of Lizzie’s past. It didn’t flow well. I also didn’t appreciate a character of Asian descent being called “exotic” multiple times.

This story had great potential and I would read more from this author. I just would have preferred a smoother transition between timeframes and more focus on the computer/hacking aspects of the story.

If you’re a fan of women in science and mysteries with a hacker storyline… then you may enjoy this book.

CW: Death of a Parent, Terminal Illness, Grief, Blackmail, Body Injury, Stalking, Shady Business Dealings, Wrongful Imprisonment.

You don’t know her, but chances are she knows everything about you. Experiencing loss at an early age, Lizzie quickly learned the only person she could truly rely upon was herself. Literally left to her own devices, Lizzie, ironically, makes a name for herself by renaming anonymous, living in the shadows, working in cyber security.

Trusting very few people, she scoffs at how vulnerable and naive her clients are. That’s why, at the first sign of danger, she reinvents herself, no trace of her former persona to be found. But as Lizzie should know, even the most careful of coders has a crack just waiting to be compromised.

Living in the digital age, I found Girl Alt Delete’s premise instantly relatable. Who hasn’t worried about the open forum of the World Wide Web? But for all the promise this book’s premise had, I had trouble computing its message. Told in alternating timelines, it was hard to keep track of the then vs now. A quick read, as the book approached its ending, it felt like it was ramping up rather than winding down. So when the story did ultimately conclude, I felt myself wanting more out of its wrap up.

Despite its bugs, Girl Alt Delete is a story that might resonate with readers of tech tinged fiction. Thank you to Red Clover Digital for a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

This book took me by surprise. The first few chapters are a little chaotic and hard to follow as you are diving into the life of the main character, Lizzie, through a few different periods of time. Lizzie's story unfolds through multiple layers of time periods in her life. Once I was in, I was in deep. The story was gripping and kept me guessing until the end. You will never guess how the book ends.

It is not necessary to understand the ins and outs of cyberspace to read this book. While coding and hacking take center stage here, the book is well written and researched so that most everything you need to know about these topics are within its pages. It was a new topic for me and I enjoyed learning about everything.

Throughout the story, Lizzie has relationships with a variety of characters. I loved seeing each one of these grow on the page. I was particularly fond of the relationship Lizzie has with her stepbrother.

Lastly, I always want to plug books with fantastic LGBTQIA+ representation. This book contains a variety of sexualities, both with the main character herself and with the supporting cast. This book won't disappoint in that arena.

Wow! If I could give this book ten stars I would. I couldn't put it down and it played like a movie in my mind. By far this is probably my favorite book I’ve read this year! The main character was strong and determined, she was also very intelligent and skillful. Read this book well written book!

This was like you know what other book that I have read before. This was so good. I loved the character bath and how she became a hacker. I loved how she was able to bring her other stories into this book also.

Huh…so this was a really interesting read! I was immediately interested and appreciated that the story got going *immediately*. I liked the overall premise and plot; the whole hacker scene was wild and with all of Lizzie’s relationships and characterization it was entertaining. But the timeline was hard to follow. I can typically “catch on” to nonlinear timelines fairly quickly but for whatever reason the pace/events in this one were constantly making me backtrack in my head to make sure I was understanding. The actual hacking/tech lingo was also over my head at times. My least favorite aspect was truly just the ending. I’d finally felt like I had a decent grasp on things and actually thought the story was really picking up speed and I was more invested than I had been and…it ended. I have a LOT of questions. Questions that are on me as a reader because stuff went over my head and I let the timeline confuse me? Maybe. Questions that were intentional because Denton wrote this wanting the end to be ambiguous and incomplete? Also maybe. There were enough confusions, for me personally, that I genuinely don’t know. I want to know the answers and am frustrated I feel “left hanging” though. May require a reread, for me!

Thanks to Red Clover Digital for the early copy of this one; it’s out now so check it out!!! #girlaltdelete #jillmariedenton

I have six things to say.

1. I met Jill Marie and within 5 minutes thought, "Damn, this woman is smart." And I mean scary smart. But not know-it-all smart because over the years I discovered she has a hungry, curious mind that's always eager to learn. When she does a thing, she does it thoroughly, with exacting attention to detail.

2. I grew up on the novels of Judith Krantz and loved them for their thorough knowledge of a subject and exacting attention to detail.

3. Jill Marie is a 21st century Judith Krantz and Girl Alt Delete is a meticulously researched, deliciously detailed book. I loved all the luxurious descriptions of food, drink, clothes and decor juxtaposed against its fast-paced techno thriller plot. Being an author, and because I know Jill, part of my brain was constantly peeking under the tablecloths of the banquet, wondering again and again, "How does she know that? How did she find this shit out? The research that went into this is crazy! I don't even like sake and I want to try this 12-year Yamazaki and its blistered firewood, bubbling caramel and tangy citrus with notes of toasted wheat and malt... (Squire, if you're reading this, you just described the Empress's next birthday cake. Ahem.)

4. At times the book was a bit too smart for me and a re-read is likely in order. I'm a linear kind of girl and between the jumps in time plus my own grasp on technology, I know I missed a few things. But...

5. I couldn't put it down. And when it was done, I even did that comical thing of flipping the back cover closed and open several times, looking for more pages. "Wait... Where's the... Is there more?"

6. If you want a smart, sleek, sexy techno thriller that's literally good enough to eat, Jill Marie is your girl alt delete.
