Book with an Identity Problem

The true history of witchcraft is long, globe-spanning, and tragic, so when I saw this audiobook at a book review site, I decided to check it out. It had a lot of potential, but unfortunately, it didn't quite live up to my expectations. It's almost as if the book has an identity problem, the publisher not quite deciding whether to focus on the actual history of witchcraft or the modern practices of it. Yes, modern practices could fit into this book’s topic, but considering that the history of this goes back centuries (and perhaps even millennia), any discussion of the modern revival of the past 50 or so years needs to be shown in historical context, not focusing on the practices, in a book entitled The History of Witchcraft. That was not done. In fact, bits about common modern practices of different stripes of witchcraft were discussed before actual history! That was certainly out of order! The actual history shared was indeed fascinating and so incredibly sad. It's hard to imagine people suffering and dying because of narrow-minded beliefs, misogyny (how those following the dictates of the Malleus Maleficarum viewed women showed more about their twisted perception than it reflected real women!), vengeful neighbors, and those who “confessed” under brutal torture. If you want a good book about the genuine history of witchcraft, you might do better with a more scholarly work or at least a more focused book.

I received a promo code for this audiobook, but that did not affect my review.

The History of Witchcraft by Delores E. Wren cast its spell on me from the first page. I've been hooked on witches ever since I saw The Wizard of Oz at the cinema when it first came out (yes, I'm that old!). That green-faced Wicked Witch scared the life out of me—but she also planted a fascination that's stayed with me for life. This book reminded me why: witches are endlessly complex, powerful, misunderstood, and—sometimes—terrifying.
Wren does a brilliant job of taking us from ancient rites and herbal charms to the burning times of Europe and right through to modern-day Wicca and Neo-Paganism. The detail is impressive—there are no frog-to-prince spells here, but plenty on cunning folk, divination, and how superstition and social tension often shaped the darker chapters of history.
Sure, it leans a bit academic in places, and there are a few factual wobbles if you're a stickler for Salem timelines—but for the casual reader, it's fascinating stuff. I loved how the book breaks things down by region and era, all while challenging our outdated ideas of what a witch really was. And I must say, the exploration of how witchcraft has survived—and even thrived—is deeply inspiring.
This is one for history lovers, folklore fans, and anyone who's ever wondered what lies behind the pointy hats and broomsticks. It's informative, thought-provoking, and oddly comforting. Witches, it turns out, were often just people like us—seeking healing, understanding, and a bit of control in a chaotic world. A cracking read!

All About Witchcraft

Witchcraft is the use of sorcery or magic. Wiccecraft is composed of both males and females. Wicca are males. Wicce are females. Witchcraft began as early as the 4th century. In folklore, witches had healing powers, power to fly, transform into animals, influence people's lives, and hurt them. Witches have powers to cause harm through the "evil eye." Their magic attacks include attachment, binding, and fixing. Christianity viewed witchcraft as an act against God, a form of devil worship, and is seen as a serious offense to God. Christians had witch hunts, trials, and executions.

King Henry VIII executed Anne Boleyn for witchcraft. Alizon Device was killed in the Pendle Witch Trials of 1612. King James VI had Agnes Sampson, a healer/witch, burned at the stake for conspiring with the Devil. Isobel Gowdie was strangled and burned in 1662 after being convicted of witchcraft. Marie Laveau New Orleans 1794 was a famous voodoo practicing witch. If you ask for Marie Laveau's help in the form of a wish, she will grant it. Malin Matsdotter, Nostradamus (psychic), Mother Shipton (psychic), and Catherine Monvoisin (abortionist/revenge rituals) were all accused of witchcraft.

This book covers herbs Artemisia/Mugwort (hallucinogen), Deadly Nightshade/belladonna (sleep/death used to humanely euthanize),Henbane (for anxiety), Poppy (pain, insomnia, love spells), Vervain (smudging), Mandrake (good luck, love spells). This book has great information.

This book offers a comprehensive view of witchcraft for anyone wanting to know more about its origins. This book takes a more academic approach to learning about witchcraft, even discussing Christianity's view. Chapters depict witches in art, myths, and legends over the last few centuries. This book would be great to add to anyone's collection.

Interesting Reading

A comprehensive view of witchcraft through history and cultures, however there are some inaccuracies with regard to the information given on British history, otherwise an interesting read.
