"Jimmy is a true teaching savant" James W. Skotchdopole, Oscar-winning Producer
In his book, author Jimmy Naraine has written a simple how-to guide on creating courses online. He talks about how everyone has something they can share and teach to others, and by creating online courses, you can make money from it. Right from the start, this book will give you the confidence you need to share your talents with others. From finding ideas for your course, building the structure, how to present your ideas, to the avenue with which you will present them, he has everything here for you to find your niche and begin your quest to becoming an online teacher. I really enjoyed his chapter on presenting, filming, and producing your online course. He really shed some light on what it will take to produce your course. From professional filming to doing it yourself, he gives you some budgeting ideas and some tips on how to present it (like public speaking), which we all have a fear of.
If you have knowledge to share with the world and am not sure how to go about doing that, this book is for you! Your dream of helping others and sharing your knowledge is just a book away from becoming a reality.
I've read many books on the topic. Jimmy is very upbeat, warm, and generous. Even though I skimmed through parts of it, I learned quite a bit from the book. He summarizes each chapter, tells relevant stories, and offers tons of encouragement and advice. I rarely write reviews but, as Jimmy advises course creators to do, he exceeded my expectations.
How-to books are my guilty pleasure and totally not secret vice (as my reading them is there for all of Goodreads to see). How-to books written by men, especially by entrepreneurial men, abduct me into a parallel realm of male anxiety, male need to 'win', male thoughts on competition, male examples throughout (I don't think Naraine mentioned a single woman in his case-studies; in addition, all the activities and objects were Bugattis, sky diving, getting a six-pack at the gym-- contrast that with the How-to books by Marie Kondō or Simran Kaur (Girls That Invest) and their delight in handbags and manicures).
Reading how-to books can spur me to do stuff but it's also just low-stakes entertainment reading, like watching a cookery or gardening show without any intention of cooking or weeding. I am playing with the idea of designing an online course and Naraine gives some useful tips. However, a lot of the book is devoted to overcoming your fears and learning to deal with public speaking. Now, I am an academic and have zero fear of public speaking so while I appreciate that a book like this, aimed at a broad audience, might need one chapter on dealing with nervousness, I did not need the many chapter and sections on tackling fear (sky diving fear, getting dumped by a wave fear) which to me would sit more logically in a book about public speaking or overcoming fear.
I was also hoping for more specific advice on how actually to design an online course, that is: do you use powerpoint? How do you make it so that your talking head appears in the corner? How do you soundproof a room? How do you set up interviews - talking heads or sitting side by side? What apps do you need to make a quiz? and so forth.
Having said all that, the author does come across as personable and the points about Udemy vs Teachable are helpful.
This came across my dash as a 99p Amazon deal and that's just catnip for a how-to addict.
This book is a simple plan of action that Jimmy Naraine has created to help anyone create their first online course. You want to start by becoming a creator. If you’re an expert in your field, your goal is to create something for others. Next, you’ll want to focus on your ideal audience so that you can make a good decision about what to teach. Jimmy goes into detail about how to design your entire course. You won’t feel overwhelmed by his instructions or knowledge. I recommend this book if you’re looking to fully understand how the course creation process works.
Self-doubt, procrastination, imposter syndrome are just some of the things that have held me back in 2023. Held me back from getting my online course out there.
This book 📚 (course creation simplified) has really resonated with me and it has got me really excited. Excited to get home from my holidays and record my online investing course.
So a massive thanks from me for Jimmy writing ✍️ this book. I have a feeling it’s going to be a game changer for me and my course 👍
This book was a winner; both interesting and informative. Being a blogger, I have often thought of creating some kind of online course. with this comprehensive guide and blueprint, it feels like a more fathomable consideration. I recommend this book for anyone who is looking for that special niche to share your knowledge.
Great ideas structured in a way that flows logically. The structure makes the transition to reality straightforward. Nice that it includes business strategy.
I meant to read this book a couple of years ago however, you know life gets in the way. Just finished reading it today and I really enjoyed the material.
