The Burmese python is native to Southeast Asia but an invasive species in Florida. They started spreading widely from the southern part of the state 20 years ago. Authorities believe the Burmese pythons thrived after being released or released into the wild by their owners. Estimates vary on the number of pythons in Florida, but experts say more than 300,000 pythons may be living across the state. Since there are no natural predators in the area, they can reproduce rapidly. Burmese pythons can live about 20 years. Mature female pythons can lay up to 100 eggs per litter.
