Serena Percy is no believer, but the psychic knew things no one else could have known. When Lady Serena and her brother learn that their parents’ killers fled to the Americas, they cross the ocean to a new land. But before they can unravel the dark threads of the conspiracy, a familiar face finds them.
Vincent Mandeville, twice betrayed and drunk on all the whiskey in Ireland, arrives in the United States and pursues Serena at his first sight of her. But the lady's focus will not waver and her trust is not earned lightly—especially not by the Malicious Mandeville.
With Serena's sharp wit and Vincent's razor tongue, they cut through clue after clue. But how will they ever unite, with her chasing the elusive past and him always running from it?
“Serena will be happy with me. Enemies and all. I am the villain you should be rooting for,”
Thoughts💡 I loved the writing in this one at first, the dialogue reminded me of the fast paced randomness of the Gilmore Girls. The story had the fanciful flair of historical romance and the steamy spice of a Lisa Kleypas. It started with a scathing look at the Ton in a fast paced alliterative criticisms and then hopped over to Industrialized (Reconstruction) era America to disparage the wealthy there. There was a mix of instalove, secret society mischief, and a murder mystery to this plot. However, as the story progressed it slowly started to devolve. The author had a tendency to tell you things instead of showing them. So each exciting new twist or clue didn’t feel like something that was discovered merely something you were told about. But it was complicated and intricate so it still had a small element of surprise. The ending had a dramatic sort of soap opera feel to it and for the right reader it would be fun. There was some fisticuffs, emotional turmoil, and dramatic shenanigans from some meddling characters.
✨Note✨Standalone romance with overlapping characters from other novels.
