Scars in the Sunlight: Reflections After a Disorienting Diagnosis

Rate this book
One life-altering diagnosis for a young mother teaches a lifetime of lessons for an entire family. If you or a loved one have been diagnosed with breast cancer, especially if at a young age, this is the book you need. The uniquely vulnerable story combines the perfect amount of honest reflection, insight, advice, and sweet family stories to create a guidebook of hope for others. Cancer can feel so lonely, but you are not alone. I stood in front of the mirror and did not recognize what was staring back at me. It was gaunt and awkward. Too thin. A bald head with no eyebrows. Two large scars across the chest where curves should be. The sun shone through the skylight, emphasizing the unfamiliar contours as I struggled to process what I was seeing. As my eyes searched for any bit of recognition, they caught each other. Reality caught reflection.
There you are.
I know you. I inched closer until the rest of the world disappeared. It was only in the eye-to-eye moment that I found her. Those blue eyes were the only thing familiar; the only thing grounding me to…myself. I would return there again and again. Whenever I felt like I was in the wrong body, whenever I struggled to understand my reality, I would go back to that mirror and look beyond the scars to find myself. Even after the treatments and surgeries were complete, I struggled to trust my body again. The gripping fear of cancer recurrence was always on my mind- a tether keeping me tied to my trauma and preventing me from moving forward. It wasn’t until several years later that I experienced what I didn’t realize I needed- internal, spiritual healing. This unexpected and precious gift occurred while at a surf camp with other survivors- a most beautiful opportunity to reframe the perception of my changed body. Maybe sharing my experience now will give you (or your loved one) the strength and encouragement to endure your struggles. And the hope that someday, through healing, you will be able to appreciate the sunlight on your own scars.

From the very first page, Shelly's raw and honest account of her experience grips your heart and doesn't let go until the final word.

In this book, Shelly doesn't shy away from sharing the emotional rollercoaster she endured upon receiving her cancer diagnosis. But amidst the darkness, Shelly beautifully weaves in moments of hope, resilience, and even humor, making this a truly balanced and authentic portrayal of her battle with cancer.

What sets Scars in the Sunlight apart is its ability to offer genuine insights and practical tips for those facing similar challenges. Shelly's genuine desire to help others going through the same experience shines through in every page. Her words provide comfort, guidance, and a sense of camaraderie to anyone grappling with a cancer diagnosis.

As a reader, I was deeply moved by Shelly's strength, positivity, and unwavering determination to overcome the odds stacked against her. Her willingness to share her innermost struggles and triumphs is a testament to her courage and selflessness, making her a true inspiration for all.

Whether you have faced cancer personally, know someone who has, or simply seek a powerful and uplifting read, this book will touch your heart and soul.

This book is a collection of journal entries shared on social media during the course of breast cancer diagnosis, treatment and recovery alongside reflections written more recently at every step of the process. Shelly Vaughn is a brave voice who details the shock of diagnosis, the endless incremental steps of treatment, and her concern for her young daughters and husband. More than anything, though, her spiritual life and insights propel the book and its journey forward. An inspiring read and appreciation of life and all who ease the way.

This book was truly meaningful to dive deep into the mind of someone who is battling cancer. Shelly describes her personal journey through each stage in an easy to digest way that makes you instantly feel connected.
It’s hard to say a book about cancer is “good” but this book was truly amazing as it was written with love, experience, and purpose. Reading this gave me purpose in finding joy in life’s difficult times as well as rejoicing in its heightened moments.
I couldn’t recommend this book more- for any reader; whether you are supporting someone with cancer, you yourself may be battling cancer, or you have no relation whatsoever.
Be kind to others always

Scars in the Sunlight is a real story about a real person whose faith, circle of friends, medical professionals, and close family helped her navigate a difficult diagnosis and treatment period. Not only is this a beautiful story of Shelly’s own vulnerability and strength, it's also a practical manual for how to be a great friend and supporter. I learned so much.
