Not just the best British gangster movie ever made. My vote for the best British movie ever made!
The Long Good Friday is controversial for many reasons. The Irish component (many people thought it was IRA propaganda) and the extreme violence (and it IS extreme, make no mistake!) primarily being the two main ones. When it hit, it hit hard, and was immediately talked about, so much so that the original backers wanted to distance themselves from such 'ugly' material.
The movie is stark, bold, gritty, uncompromising and unforgiving, every bit the words that sit on the naked printed page. Every great movie starts with a great script and Barrie Keeffe gave Bob Hoskins and co the best blueprint they could have ever asked for.
While the movie isn't an easy watch by any stretch of the imagination, thankfully Keeffe's script is an easy read. I had to hunt this down and I'm glad I added it to my bookshelf.
(FYI - When viewing the film, when Harold, Razors and Jeff take Errol the Ponce down into the kitchen for 'verbals,' no one would blame you if you went to make a quick cup of tea. It's squirmingly, butt-clenchingly realistic what happens next).
One of the best screenplays I have ever read. Ever since I first watched this film, I had to find the script and read it for myself. Wow! So well written. This film got me binge watching British crime films from the 70s and 80s. It also got me more interested in writing crime stories.
And let's not forget about the talented Bob Hoskins who lead the film.
Highly recommend reading the script if you can find it!
