This book contains the holy words of the holy and awesome Rabbi Yisrael ben Eliezer, the Baal Shem Tov of blessed memory for everlasting life in the world to come. These words are from the books of Rav Yaakov Yoseph of Polonoye of blessed memory, a disciple of the Baal Shem Tov.
When one studies G-d’s Word in the Torah, or communicates with Him in prayer, one should aim to see through the individual ideas, words, and even letters one is expressing, and behold the Oneness of the Infinite G-d that is hidden behind them. Everything ultimately arises from this Oneness, and when one reaches this, one has arrived at the very goal of Torah study and prayer. And since everything G-d does is for the best, when one reaches this level one realizes there is no such thing as harsh judgments. Page 80-81
The purpose of prayer Is to reach a state of Oneness with G-d, and the release from suffering for which we pray, or the benefits that we seek, are only the catalysts for us to pray and reach that goal. The wise man thus goes straight for the goal, by way of which he anyways attains relief and benefit. Page 83
Thus, when one deeply understands that G-d is with him right there and then, the veil is removed and all suffering ceases. This is what the first teaching means by saying that one should first praise G-d, because G-d’s praise is that His Glory fills all the earth, and that he can be found amidst all pain. When one realizes this, the suffering ceases, as said, and one can pray, because the suffering will automatically cease, since one knows how to praise G-d in this manner. Page 84
