Good analyses of earlier works, but missing crucial biographical and musical information, as the book was published decades before Barber’s death. I would recommend Barbara Heyman’s “Samuel Barber: The Composer and His Music” or Howard Pollack’s “Samuel Barber: His Life and Legacy” instead.
