This is not a romance A recently converted vampire, with no knowledge of Vampire Lore, comes into his power as he is thrust violently into a brutal civil war between competing sects. Thrown inexplicably backward in time, he becomes a silent observer to the first vampire conclave, and if he is to survive, he must learn the Lore in real time and kill the Hathorites leader
Halse’s horrific corpus ranges from urban horror to twisty dystopian, with breezy dialog and a sense of omnipresent fear that really sucks you in.
The Lore Giver (first installation in Vampire Book of Lore, from 2012) is a splattery yarn about the schooling of novice biter, Tony Delmonti.
Delmonti and his clan of naive street vampires expose their necks to a mysterious elder known only as His Lordship, who lures Delmonti with the promise of REAL lore, legendarium, and power.
Delmonti’s clan is peopled by brutal urban (but somehow hilarious and adorable) lowlifes – prostitutes, thugs, club posers, vamps, and bite-sized hipsters. Delmonti, a cocky knowitall bully, actually knows very little (a vampire strain of Dunning-Kruger?), spelling certain doom for newbies of the hemoglobin obsessed sub-species.
The Lore Giver is not True Blood nor frilly Twilight – altho the world-building does impedance match nicely with the classics. This story incisively (haha) exposes ugly, bizzare vampiric behavior. There is no interviewing these creatures, no sad nostalgic remembrances. These aren’t wealthy aristocrats (yet?), self-pitying / self-righteous martyrs, mourning their lost humanity.
If you’re (blood)thirsty for a twist on Interview or The Hunger, sink your teeth into The Lore Giver!
"The Lore Giver" by Ralph F. Halse is a tantalizing vampire tale revolving around Tony Delmonti, who is seduced into the world of vampirism by a rich, aristocratic Countess. She promises him eternal youth, endless women, and a hedonistic lifestyle filled with sex and party drugs. However, Tony soon realizes that these promises have been barely fulfilled, with his experiences limited to the Countess's own indulgences. This novel delves into the dark, alluring world of vampires, exploring themes of desire, deception, and the quest for fulfillment. Ideal for readers who enjoy a mix of sensuality and supernatural intrigue.
