This book is a useful read. Although a good deal of it is out of date (Security evolves fairly quickly), it does a fairly good job of explaining a wide range of subjects and contains a range of .htaccess hacks that are still quite useful. Not as well covered here are Firewall plugins such as WordFence, WAFs (with which these plugins compete) and Membership software (such as S2Member). The intent of the last is to provide paid access to different levels of content -- but these can also be used to provide security for in-house software or content for corporate use only.

The book could be looked at as a fairly comprehensive list of issues with which a WordPress webmaster or plugin developer should become familiar. However, given the level and constant mutation of threats today, anyone serious about protecting their site will be keeping up to date with online reading. Start with https://codex.wordpress.org/Hardening... and follow that down the rabbit hole as deep as you like. Then try to keep up with monthly attacks/exploits through sites such as https://www.wordfence.com/blog/. The biggest threat on the horizon (not just for WordPress) are APTs (Advanced Persistent Threats), many of which are being crafted to be undetectable by virus protection. Some of these will be built using delivery systems from the blueprints of disassembled cyber weapons such as StuxNet.
