When young orphan Pip is frightened into helping an escaped convict on the run, he must steal from his sister, the formidable Mrs. Joe. The next day, at Christmas dinner, just as the theft is about to be discovered, the soldiers arrive with a pair of handcuffs. Pip and the Convict is the second in this series of stories from Dickens classics retold for young readers.
Wow. Dickens makes for a grim picture book. Here, the beginning of Great Expectations is transformed into more modern language and into a picture book. Rather grim, and not really for the preschool set, or even below primary school I think. The convict, never named as Magwitch here, is portrayed very darkly- menacing, threatening to have Pip's heart and liver out.
