In this groundbreaking book, diabetes and weight management expert Osama Hamdy, M.D., Ph.D., reveals how you can reverse the course of your type 2 diabetes, lose weight for good and finally reclaim your health - in just 12 weeks!
Dr. Hamdy is at the forefront of cutting-edge clinical research conducted at Joslin Diabetes Center, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School. For the first time, he shares those scientific breakthroughs in a usable and doable step-by-step 12-week plan based on the successful Why WAIT (Weight Achievement and Intensive Treatment) program he conducts at Joslin. And with the professionally formulated exercise plans fine-tuned by Dr. Sheri Colberg, an exercise physiologist and renewed diabetes fitness expert, you'll not only get results but keep them.
Dr. Hamdy and his Joslin team have helped hundreds of patients:
1. Break free from the pill bottle. It is possible to cut your medications by 50 to 60% or even stop them altogether!
2. Stop fearing the scale. Learn how to safely lose, and keep off, those 10, 20 or even 50 plus pounds that are holding you back from a healthy life.
3. Never dread exercise again. Tailor your exercise plan to the way you really live and work, so you can get results without being a slave to the gym.
4. Make it easy. The dozens of checklists, goal worksheets and real-life success stories in this book will keep you motivated to make smart decisions, even on the busiest days.
So don't settle for a diabetes diagnosis.
Shed the pounds, toss the medications and conquer your diabetes, once and for all.
I was very interested in reading this book since I have been living with my genetical diabetes for quite some time now. Sincerely speaking I thought there was more to this book than what I felt was stating the obvious. But I kept on reading... And yes for me it states the obvious or at least most parts although rereading them can help refreshing parts that I might tend to forget willingly or not (such as portion weighing). Now I do not want to sound arrogant in my knowledge (but being a health practitioner does help a bit here) on second thoughts this book might not state the obvious for those who are new to diabetes, or pre-diabetes or whatever there is in between and akin. And from my experience with patients even those who have being living with such maladies for quite a long time might not find it so obvious. So what is my “verdict”: I would suggest this book as a life-time companion to read and reread occasionally. A book to keep at a GP's waiting room or a nutritionist. It is simple to read. No medical jargon. Easy to follow. All things are taken in steps and tables come to aid. Just one thing to add, not all diabetes or pre-diabetes are created equally. Each of us has her/his own story and need specific and individual treatment. So yes read and follow this book but first of all listen to your body, discuss with a doctor you trust and a nutritionist that can follow you through. And remember there are no hard and fast rules, we change in time and so our needs.
The Diabetes Breakthrough A Scientifically Proven Program to Lose Weight, Cut Medications and Reverse Diabetes Osama Hamdy, Sheri Colberg
If You or a Family Member Has Diabetes, They Must Read This Book!
At an affiliate of Harvard Medical School the Joslin Diabetes Center has been conducting research on this ground breaking plan with astonishing results. This book chronicles a step-by-step process that the center uses daily for its patients.
The plan is for 12 weeks—that’s only 3 months to a renewed life style that can reverse the diabetes diagnosis. The amazing thing about this book is that it isn’t just another fad diet book aimed at getting more people duped to line the pockets of the authors. This book is based on real-world results with a renowned Diabetes Center. In an offer to help many more people than what can attend the center, this book is an extension of the Center reaching out to anyone willing to put in the work. It can be used in conjunction with local healthcare providers. It teaches what the popular diabetic drugs do to the body so you can discuss with your doctor which ones you should really be taking. Which ones help you stabilize your blood sugars and which ones hinder weight loss even leading to weight gain.
The book starts out by teaching what happens in the body with excessive sugars that triggers diabetes. Then it shows step by step how to change a lifestyle by detailing a day-by-day diet plan. There are numerous recipes making the diet versatile and do-able. Add in the week-by-week exercises and physical improvement plan that rounds out the program for a whole-body approach. There are workout plans with illustrations, charts and pictures that can be done at home or in a gym. If this program can work for the patients at the Center that devote themselves to changing their lifestyle, then it can work for the reader too!
The premise of the book is that losing weight and exercising will help control diabetes (Type 1 or Type 2) and pre-diabetes. The 12-week plan (which can be extended as long as needed) for addressing the difficulty of losing weight is first handled with controlled eating of pre-portioned commercial foods, such as certain brands of meal replacement shakes and two frozen dinners (again, certain types which do not exceed 300 calories per meal). Dieters can add in snacks through the day. The recommended plan for women is 1,500 calories and for men 1,800 to begin with. The proportions of protein, fat and carbohydrates are calculated to prevent muscle loss during the diet.
Exercise is incorporated from day 1, and includes aerobic, stretching, cross-training, and other types of activities.
There is discussion of various diabetes medications for those who take them, along with information on how changing medications might assist overweight patients to lose weight.
The tone of the book is accessible to the average reader, and includes some success stories of people who have had unique challenges in losing weight.
From the website of the Joslin Diabetes Center: The author, "Dr. Osama Hamdy, is the Medical Director of Joslin’s Obesity Clinical Program, Assistant Medical Director of Professional Medical Education, Clinical Investigator in the Section on Clinical, Behavioral & Outcomes Research at Joslin, and an Instructor at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Hamdy earned his medical and doctoral degrees from Mansoura Faculty of Medicine in Egypt and his fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism from University of Missouri and Harvard University. is the director of the Joslin Diabetes program at Harvard University." The book is based on the Why WAIT program used there.
Readers who want a science-based program presented in an easy-to-read format will enjoy this.
I’m not in this stage yet but close. Since I have a heart condition it limits something’s. My new Dr. was not happy with my weight gain; neither was I. I am a former athlete not pro so I know my body in/out. Diet is at the top of my list, exercise well it could/will improve. As do 2 of my 3 kids, now young adults know their bodies in/out. & it’s a joy when I can watch my 2 granddaughters participate in sports.
1st/foremost ask your Primary Care Provider (PCP) Dr.) for a full physical. This is a 12-week program entitled WAIT (Weight Achievement & Intensive Treatment).
A must read for undergrad/grad college level Health/P.E. or rehabilitation classes or adults in general. Most everyone is prone to diabetes.
Awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written packed with facts/charts/ (diet, exercise), information (medication) book on diabetes. It was very easy to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. No grammar errors, repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could make a great PP presentation or A & E (other) mini TV series. No doubt in my mind a very easy rating of 5 stars for this book.
Thank you for the free book Tony Parsons MSW (Washburn)
I'm a sucker for "breakthrough" - and I hoped for something new or different. Instead, there's nothing here that's any different from any of a million other books - lose weight, count calories, do lots of exercise. If you're brand new to diabetes and don't exercise and don't see any reason to exercise, it might be useful.
Overall, I'm glad I checked this out of the library!
I was so hoping to win the Diabetes Break-Through book form Goodreads,as I have a close friend with diabetes.Reading this step by step book helped me understand her Type 2 Diabetes better so i can give her the support she needs. The explanations were clear and concise. It was a lot of info in one place, and it was all easy to digest and follow.
Thank you Goodreads for this book. This book gives you a 12 week plan in helping you with diabetes. It explains the various medications that are used, different exercises and recipes to help you manage. By following this book you should lose weight and lower your medicine dosages or be able to get off some.
I found this book to be very helpful and easy to understand. It gives clear, easy to follow steps that will help to control blood sugar and diabetes. Much of it is information that I have seen before, but the author lays it out into a plan that can easily become a lifestyle of making choices and acting in a manner to lessen the impact of diabetes and greatly reduce blood sugar.
Not a bad book. Some basic stuff that is backed up to show that you can control your diabetes. Gave it to my mom who also enjoyed reading it as she was diagnosed with type 2 years ago.
