And now, left to fend for themselves in an ignorant society where the futuristic technology of Prime Way no longer exists, Kyle and Cora must choose. Packed with gritty romance, thematic depth, and rip-roaring action, this Sci-Fi thriller has readers clamoring for a sequel and the world pondering a question that has critics raving. Unique premise, wonderful writing, capturing conflict, and strong characters that will stick in your memory long after reading. Teen readers will want to fight sleep before they can put down this one! I have no doubt that Caroline George has a bright future ahead of her.
‘The Prime Way Program: Be the Victor’ is definitely the start of a best-selling trilogy! From the moment I looked at the cover and saw one of my best friends’ names on the bottom, I knew Caroline had written a masterpiece. Once I dove in, I was hooked! There were many nights where I would just lay there and read until the early morning hours, and even then I didn't want to stop! The farther I read, the more I fell in love with the characters, the more I wanted to stop their pain, the more I cheered them on and believed in them and what they stood for.
It never felt like I was reading a story, but rather living it with the characters. That’s what really pulled me in- there is so much depth and complexity to the writing! Each character, each idea, each sentence carefully constructed to create a perfect image. ‘The Prime Way Program: Be the Victor’ is definitely one of my favorite books and I am absolutely in love with it!! Caroline once asked me, “Be honest. Would you like the book even if you didn't know me?” My answer was this: “I wouldn't have even known about it, let alone willingly choose it if I didn't know you. I wanted to read it because of our friendship, but I fell in love with it all on my own!”
This book is now among one of my favorites. I had it in my queue since it was released and for some reason never actually started reading it. Once I did I was hooked. If you enjoy the Hunger Games but felt that the chemistry between Katniss and Peeta was lacking, this is where you are going to find it. George does an AMAZING job at setting up Cora and Kyle's relationship and characters. From the very moment you meet them you do nothing other than hope to see them succeed in everything that is thrown in their way. Action is never missing and that really helps the story flow, making you never want to put this book down (I know I had a hard time doing so). There is so much I love about this book, and naturally there are a few flaws and not wholly original, but nothing detracts from the story that is presented. It is certainly one of the better ones written in my opinion. The ending will leave you speechless and eager for the next installment! Thank you Ms. George for writing this! I cannot wait for the second one, please get on that.
I became a huge fan of Caroline George after reading her 5-star novel The Vestige, so I immediately purchased this novel by this amazing young author. It's been sitting on my TBR for too long, but I finally got a chance to read it. You know a book is good when I can read a 500-page novel in one sitting; I could not put it down! . Cora and Kyle are two wonderful protagonists, and this story crackles with energy. The storyline was original, and the tension consistently grew more intense with every chapter. George's ability to create a world the reader can believe in, and a story that the reader can enjoy, is what makes her one of my new favorite authors.
I enjoyed this book, but wanted to like it more than I actually did. When I first found it, I passed it buy due to the high price for an ebook by an unknown author and almost no reviews. I'm glad I read it though. While I liked the book and might continue the series, I was somewhat disappointed in the actual execution.
The story is set in present day U.S. and Prime Way has found a way to make super soldiers through chemical and other means. A group of teens 'volunteer' and the army is created. They learn that Prime Way is really run by terrorist and some of the soldiers rebell and stop the terrorist. This is where the story picks up with our main characters Kyle and Cora. Oddly enough, I wish the series would of started at the beginning. Sometimes I found myself thinking the back story sounded more interesting than what I was actually reading.
Both heroes are 16. Kyle is likable if a little whipped by his love and devotion to Cora. Cora on the other hand was hard to like. She was very eclectic of personality. Sometimes she was the super soldier, others an emotional basket case soley dependent on Kyle and other times she seamed just mean. She also had this big self-pity thing going which isn't as bad as the self-loathing a lot of YA characters are written.
So my main complaints are:
Too much over the top. I get that these are beyond human super soldiers, but sometimes the author threw the kitchen sink at them. Which leads to the next problem.
Inconsistencies galore. In one moment the characters are doing something superhuman while the next sentence indicates they are physically spent or vice versa. Also, there are scenes where our heroes are standing in the middle of a battle having a memory flashback while hordes of people are being slaughtered, yet these characters are left completely unharmed. There is one scene where Cora is preparing to attack a swarm of flying creatures and then hears stampeding super wolves and turns her attention to them. Apparently the swarm of flying creatures just stopped and waited for her to finish what she was doing or vanished!
Finally, we have what I call the Rube Goldberg Killing Sequences. Think batman TV show from the 1960s where instead of just putting a bullet in the back of batman's brain, the Penguin ties him up and sets up the elaborate sequence of events that will eventually lead to batman's death. We are treated to dozens of these. The main villain has our heroes available numerous times and never can bring himself to just cut their throats. Cora has the Villain lined up for an arrow shot, the villain is distracted by multiple other events and instead of taking the shot and ending the war before it starts which she has vowed to give her life to do, she passes on the shot, waits for the villain and henchmen to leave the room so she can hold the hand of her dying friend.
10/10 RECOMMEND!!!!! Caroline George wrote a wonderful book. I caught a few spelling errors, but they were minor. They don't matter though, when talking about the content of the novel. This book was absolutely AMAZING and I can not wait to read the next two in the series!!! Absolutely loved it!
