Pirate Gran and the Monsters
The final installment in the charming and hilarious Pirate Gran children’s book series.
Gran used to be a pirate, so she isn’t afraid of anything.
Not even monsters.
So when her old shipmates shiver, and her crocodile quakes,
Pirate Gran takes out her cutlass and rushes to the rescue . . .
In the final book in the Pirate Gran series, our favorite seafaring pensioner returns for a new adventure! This time, she must save her old friends Flint-Hearted Jack, Fingers O’Malley, Cut-Throat Malone, and her beloved pet crocodile. Pirate Gran tackles her shipmates’ worst fears with courage, her cutlass, and a pinch of logic. And when she’s done with the monsters, even her silly pirates agree it’s safe to put out the lights.

Lovely story - empowering for young children and lovely illustrations. Encourages imagination and potential to interpret things as something they are not “that’s not a dinosaur roaring, it’s grandpa roaring!”. Only bit I didn’t like was the bit where Gran says you should be ashamed of yourselves. Seemed a bit strong to me.

Pirate Gran and the Monsters is about a Grandmother who is a pirate, throughout the book she helps her shipmates overcome their fears by facing them and helping them realise it's just their imagination getting the better of them when they get scared.
I liked the book, it's short and to the point and has enough content to send some positive messages to children. It's also quite amusing and has some great artwork throughout.
The book would be useful in the classroom to encourage children to engage in their imagination in a positive way, there is one particular part that would work well to inspire creative writing. The book would also be very useful for helpful children to accept their anxieties and fears and encourage them to overcome these and not allow them to be an obstacle in their learning or in general life. It would also be ideal for reading to the class, guided reading and independent reading.
The appropriate age range is around 5-7 years old
