What does a dentist do? Early readers will find out in this easy-to-read title. DENTISTS HELP US lets readers learn to recognize simple words as they are repeated throughout the text.
“Dentists Help Us,” is a very basic introduction to a dentist’s job. Spare text accompanies full-color photographs of diverse and cheerful individuals in a dentist’s office. The very simple text is a good lead-in for pre-school or early elementary children making their first visit to the dentist, or as a springboard to discussion of this community helper’s job. Beginning readers will be able to master this text with minimal help.
Dental hygienists are not mentioned in the text, but much of what is depicted in the book are tasks that are generally relegated to a hygienist, especially taking x-rays and cleaning teeth.
A brief index and several titles for additional reading are included, along with a table of contents. The author lists two web sites at the end of the book for readers interested in learning more about the topic. One leads to the American Dental Hygienists’ Association’s pedestrian “Kids Stuff,” page. The other is Nemours’ “KidsHealth,” article, “Going to the Dentist.” Nemours’ page offers a read-aloud feature. Unfortunately, the term “hygienist” is consistently mispronounced using this feature.
Note: The Brand X stock photo used on page 17 shows an image of x-rayed teeth on a computer screen. The image is so clear that the patient’s name (Jonathan Ross) and the date of the image (4/18/02) can be read.
