This book demonstrated how vitally important the first story in a collection is. The very first story deeply disappointed me, and for the rest of the book, I found myself bracing against disappointment that, thankfully, didn’t happen again. By the end of the book, I realized that I had been encouraged and reminded again of God’s faithfulness through troubles and trials. That came from the stories of faithful sacrifice, true repentance, faithful obedience, and gentle Christian maturity. Each story is very short. They are really just vignettes about each person. Some of these stories are examples of extraordinary sacrifices, such as John and Betty Stam. Others are stories of the daily struggles of faithful Christian living despite pain, loss, suffering, illness, and temptations. Those are wonderful reminders of what God does for each and every one of us. But about that first story… it is about a woman who overcame incredible odds to help thousands of children despite overwhelming prejudice. Her accomplishments blessed thousands. But – she destroyed her family in the process. Even the authors admit that her singular focus on education was what lead to the end of her marriage. It was heartbreaking. Why would you lead off a collection of faithful Christians with a story like that? Is that a good example of Biblical ministry and family? It almost felt like a token story. So, if you decide to read this collection, I would recommend skipping the first story.
Really enjoyed these short stories. So many times inspirational stories are the type that seem to be perfect in the end. Not so for these men and women many of whom are struggling with their ministries or have suffered for the cause. These are stories that show life with Christ is not an easy life, there will be suffering.
