So many great tips and answers to kids real life questions. This book will ease the student into middle school a little easier. I would recommend this book to anyone that has a middle-grade student. It can be an overwhelming time and these real answers will help them on their journey.

The author has been writing books since she was in 5th grade and it shows. Even though she is young, the advice she gives in this book seems to be very informed. As stated in the title, the advice that is compiled is from other kids who have already gone through the transition into middle school. They detail their experiences (in true pre-teen fashion) in a questionnaire. Each chapter is dedicated to a different student that filled out the form. I think that this will be good for other kids to read. They can see that many of their problems or concerns are not unusual. I think if they see that others go trough the same or similar experiences then they can be a little bit more at ease.
The latter half of the book gives tips such as doing home work on time, always communicate, keep lists if needed, wash your hands often, or even watching what you eat. It is all geared towards kids but hopefully all this information was passed down by parents already. I’d say the first portion of the book is worth getting it for, but the second half is common sense stuff.

The Secret Combination is a good book for kids entering middle school. The great thing about this book is that it is filled with advice from real kids, hence, children would be more eager to read them and follow the advice. For example, if I, as a mother tell my kid to manage his time well and take up the responsibility of waking up on time, then he won't pay attention to it, thinking it to be a parent crap. However, if he reads the same thing in the book (and one which is written by kids just like him), then he would be more inclined to take notice and imbibe by it. The book suggests many practical things to middle school goers which even other people may benefit like preparing a day before for things needed at school so that nothing gets amiss in the early morning rush.
The book is in the form of a question-answer set, where different kids answer a set of questions, and in the end, a summary of all the advice is given for easy perusal.

Considering I am in highschool, this doesn't really apply to me anymore, but still, very informative. Wish I'd had it in 6th grade.

As a European who thus never experienced the notorious American school system, I wondered if this might give me more insight, and/or give me pause for thought regards my son’s schooling, and possible variations in approaches to such.
It didn’t really do either of those things. In fact I still couldn’t tell you, without Googling, what exactly middle school is, in the sense of what ages go there, what learning takes place there, or such.
However, it did have some things that are likely to be of value to other people, and particularly the kids who are the book’s target audience:
Firstly, a large section of the book is given over to kids’ responses to a questionnaire about their experiences moving from elementary school to middle school. These appear unmoderated and range from single-word answers to essay answers. So for those looking for peer reassurances, it seems likely this book will be great for that.
Secondly, much of the rest of the book is given over to advice that really could be applicable to many stations in life: eat some breakfast, try to stay positive, be polite, be organised, be a good listener, etc.
What it won’t do is highlight problems you might not have known about, give specific how-to instructions, or be any kind of practical survival manual in that respect.
Not like, say, a US prison system survival guide I read (and reviewed) some while back, with advices on how to get better bedding and not get stabbed, the pros and cons of checking in to solitary, how to make the most of the commissary, how to avoid getting dragged into gangs while also not being murdered for declining the invitation, etc. One may say that the US school system and the US prison system aren’t similar, but frankly, some of the fears and needs are the same, hence it coming to mind.
On a lighter note, certainly this book is focussed on very broad advice to very generic problems, or more likely, very common fears. I think this book will help a fearful person to approach middle school with more optimism and ambition.

The Secret Combination to Middle School; Real Advice from Real Kids, Ideas for Success, and Much More written by Marrae Kimball is a must read for any child about to transition from elementary school to middle school/high school (where I live we don’t have middle schools because the towns are too small). I believe that this book would really help ease the fears and make the transition easier for the students. This book was very informative and easy to read. I liked how it went through around ten people answering the same set of questions, it really helps those people who may have similar fears or worries about going from elementary to middle school. I also liked how the author listed and explained some “tips and tricks” to survive and make middle school great. Overall this book was great and I highly recommend that not only children transitioning from elementary school to middle school/high school read this, but also the parents/guardians/teachers as well because it will help give you an idea of what your child is thinking and worrying about which will help you to better help them!

An interesting read I must say, there are tons of self-help books and guides about pretty much everything these days, but only a few are worth of your time and patience, this is one of those.
I think we can pretty much agree that we all have been through this, the transition from start to middle-school is not easy, especially for kids, a new school, new friends, new teachers, the environments are not easy to get used to, so it’s nice that this book not only covers for the need of the kids but also to the parents, communication is important and consider what’s best for your kid.
Another detail to highlight is that the book is also filled with real evidence and information provided by kids, interviews and a lot more, the author really think this through, it’s not only motivational words about inspiring you to do something, this is more about knowing what you can do and where you are right now.

Q and A for the middle school beginer
The secret combination to middle school is written by Marrae Kimball and is a good guide for the new students getting ready to make the transition to the next phase in growing up and continuing the education process. Marrae has interviewed several students and compiled the advice for the future generations of middle schoolers. The biggest questions new students wanted answered were about fitting in to this new exciting and scary school. Everyone wants to be liked and feel welcome. Teachers are very helpful in the transition and are readily available to help struggling new students. I recommend sharing this book with your new middle schoolers and make sure they understand that they are not alone in this new adventure and they will find their own path through this part of their education. Check this one out and let me know what you think.

With a niece about to enter middle school I bought this book thinking it would be great for her to read. I did want to scan it first and I found it was actually better for me! I read the book as a way to better understand and connect with her as she begins this new journey. I remember plenty of middle school, but there is so much going on today that I never had to deal with.
No longer are the days of parents laughing saying, “O I remember those days.” No, I don’t. Being a kid and teen is so different now-a-days, from just 10 - 20 years ago, why wouldn’t you want all the help you can get?!
I would suggest this book to anyone close to kids / teens about to enter middle school. It is a gentle reminder from a 3rd party about the challenges they face and what we need to keep in mind as they deal with all of these changes.
