(ICE BOWL: The Cold Truth About Football's Most Unforgettable Game) [By: UNKNOWN] [Oct, 2005]

The day of the Ice Bowl game was so cold, the referees' whistles wouldn't work; so cold, the reporters' coffee froze in the press booth; so cold, fans built small fires in the concrete and metal stands; so cold, TV cables froze and photographers didn't dare touch the metal of their equipment; so cold, the game was as much about survival as it was about skill and strategy. On New Year's Eve, 1967, the Dallas Cowboys and the Green Bay Packers met for a classic NFL championship game, played on a frozen field in sub-zero weather. The "Ice Bowl" challenged every skill of these two great teams. Here's the whole story, based on dozens of interviews with people who were there—on the field and off—told by author Ed Gruver with passion, suspense, wit, and accuracy.

I need to preface this review by saying that I have been a lifelong Green Bay Packers fan. I will try to avoid any bias on my part. That being said, I enjoyed the book. It wasn't what I expected going into it. It added much interesting information; information that added to my enjoyment. It doesn't actually get to the actual game right away. The first half covered information on some of the key persons and background of the teams. There are chapters on the coaches and quarterbacks along with information of a few other players. There's a lot here that the average Cowboys and Packers fan probably didn't know. I picked up lot with it. I think it will be very interesting to both casual viewers and fanatics.

Good detail about a classic moment in NFL history..

This book brings back detailed memories of a powerful and defining moment in NFL history. Even though I was only born in 1967, I now feel a keen sense of that day and that moment. What a powerful scene - Arctic temps, high stakes, Hall of Fame players, and two of the greatest coaches in the history of the game.
If you love history, football, and defining moments....read this book.

Excellent Book

This was a book that was hard to put down. Riveting, detailed and a ton of inside information on the coaches, team histories and the players who played in that historic game. At the end of the book, a lot of game and team statistics and information.
Just a tremendous work. A keeper for the library.

A decent read about one of football's greatest games. the 1967 NFL Championship. It looks too at the rivalry of the two teams and coaches. It's especially fun for a Green Bay Packers fan.

Great read for those wanting to learn history's greatest football game!

I got so entranced with the detailed information about a game played by 2 of the greatest teams in NFL history. The Ice Bowl was played before I was born, but the writing of this is so detailed and accurate, that I felt as if I was in the stands and freezing cold weather, watching in real time. The more I read about Lombardi and Landry, the more I realized just how great they truly were. This is perfect for someone who wants to know everything about the most memorable football game in history!!

I read a favorable and inviting review of this book, so I was surprised to find it a dud. It was far too detailed for my interest as just a fan, and I felt somewhat let down--the author promised to surprise and enlighten me and did neither. I guess a real intense football fan would probably enjoy this.

I very much enjoyed reading this book. It was well written in an engaging style.
There was good background on the coaches, some players, and history behind the game. This included its significance to both teams and their playing history.

The most interesting item was Mercin's explanation for why his arms were up; appearing to signal the touchdown.

A lot of interesting football factoids. Probably any football fan would enjoy this, but especially Packer & Cowboy fans for obvious reasons.

Lots of names of all players from my youth but too technical and football terms and radio play-by-play segments were boring. I would not recommend this book.
