In 1982, Shane Howard's massive anthem 'Solid Rock' from the album Spirit of Place, (recorded with his legendary band Goanna), reverberated across the airwaves and still does today.
It was one of the first songs of its idiom to broach the subject of Aboriginal rights in Australia and impacted powerfully on a whole new generation of writers and musicians that followed.
Nearly 30 years later, Shane returned to Uluru with renowned Queensland artist Peter Hudson to gather illustrations from the school children from Mutujulu, near Uluru and create this book to share the story of these famous lyrics with a new generation.
A great book with colourful illustrations for the anthem "Solid Rock" which is set out in book form. It has the lyrics written in English and also in the Pitjantjatjara language. They are beautifully accompanied with illustrations by artist Peter Hudson and the school children from Mutujulu, near Uluru, Australia. This is a great insight into Aboriginal and Australian culture for young and old alike
The song that the book was based on was written in 1982 and it was written by the Aussie band Goanna. The song deals with land infringement of Indigenous Australians and is so apt with what’s happening right now.
These lyrics in particular “Don’t tell me that it’s justified ‘Cause somewhere someone lied Genocide Someone lied”
I can't give it 5 stars because I haven't heard the song. Every time I read it to the children I wish I had a CD of the song to make it an all round experience!
