The narrator of this story (its narrated in the first person), a lawyer called Mahesh, a widower living in Malviya Nagar, New Delhi. Mahesh is particularly close to his neighbour Kamtanath and his wife Gauri, who stuck by him some years ago when his wife passed away.

One day Gauri comes to Mahesh' office, telling him that there was an attempt to murder her a couple of days ago, when Kamtanath was out of town. That episode proves a precursor to something far more dramatic some days later. While driving to Mathura, Kamtanath ends up with a flat tyre. On opening the boot of his car, the corpse of an unknown man is found.

With all the evidence pointing against him, Kamtanath is imprisoned and charged with murder. He appoints Mahesh as his defence lawyer. Can Mahesh find unravel the mystery of the unidentified corpse in time to save Kamtanath? Is it in any way connected with the attempt at Gauri's life? Is Kamtanath really innocent, as he claims, or is there something more then meets the eye? These and many other questions confront the protagonist.

Surendra Mohan Pathak has packed the novel with surprises, twists and turns aplenty that keep you guessing all the way to the end. In a flourish that's distinctively his, there's a surprise even in the concluding line. With most mystery writers, its possible to identify a pattern after the second or third novel. Having read more than 10 novels of Pathan, I still find myself guessing what will come next.

I have admittedly read better works by Pathak. Nonetheless, Car Mein Laash is a brilliant thriller in its own right. Its remarkable that 40 years after it was first written, this book hardly feels dated. Its yet another fine work by the master of crime fiction.

This is a story of an attorney who happens to be the neighbor of a couple.

The husband from the couple is caught with a carcass in his car and the man does not have any adequate and appeasing answers for the query, dubiety and interrogation from the police.

Now the attorney has to play the role of a backer and defend the husband in the court and also be a counsel for the wife on the other hand... and all this - he has to do very protestingly.

The lawyer very reluctantly and obstinately starts the campaign and thus pleads for the chastity, clear conscience, impeccability, righteousness and sinlessness of his client.

Then their is a sister of a desperado who is also girlfriend and close aide of the murder accused.

Tough all his efforts on the line the pleader FAILS in his assignment with all his capacity.

The man, the accused, is found guilty and sinful and thus adjudged for hanging.

And then hanged.

But the story takes a unimaginable turn in last few pages where we found that the real murderer was some one else.

someone very close to the attorney himself.

Awesome, astonishing and breathtaking end that will bombshell, jerk, surprise and blow your mind like never before.

Last few words and you will be shocked for sure.

cant miss this one for sure.
