KIANA DAVENPORT is descended from a full-blooded Native Hawaiian mother, and a Caucasian father from Talladega, Alabama. Her father, Braxton Bragg Davenport, was a sailor in the U.S. Navy, stationed at Pearl Harbor, when he fell in love with her mother, Emma Kealoha Awaawa Kanoho Houghtailing. On her mother's side, Kiana traces her ancestry back to the first Polynesian settlers to the Hawaiian Islands who arrived almost two thousand years ago from Tahiti and the Tuamotu's. On her father's side, she traces her ancestry to John Davenport, the puritan clergyman who co-founded the American colony of New Haven, Connecticut in 1638.

Kiana is the author of the internationally best-selling novels, SHARK DIALOGUES, SONG OF THE EXILE, HOUSE OF MANY GODS, THE SPY LOVER, and most recently, THE SOUL AJAR, now available in paperback and on Kindle

This 3-book set was a complete joy to read. I was shocked that it cost only $0.99. But it's impossible to tell a book by its price much less its cover.

Each book is a collection of short stories; and I had become adamant that short stories cannot be read back-to-back. That each story needed space and time to be its own experience...outside the context of other stories.

However, this set, as packaged and as individual books, proved that I was wrong. Each story is distinct and interesting. And importantly, reading the next story in the queue does not diminish or outshine the next story.

The author has an amazingly varied imagination. And I thoroughly enjoyed the span...the survey across the many islands and cultures of the Pacific Ocean. And the many stories based in Hawaii are different from one another. I marvel at the breadth and the depth of these stories.

I think this set would make a marvelous gift, and I absolutely think of it as a gift I gave myself. I truly enjoyed the reading experience here. And I will give me more!

I bought this book over twelve years ago to read for my honeymoon on the Big Island. I finally read it. Guy wrenching stories about the indigenous people of the Pacific Islands. What a terrible western culture has done to those people.

Since reading Shark Dialogues, I always keep my eyes open for something new from Kiana Davenport. I don't know how I missed this collection os short stories, which is beyond excellent. The stories are engrossing, the characters developed in short order with depth and empathy, and the writing is crisp. Edgy, gorgeous, and often surprising, each story, when it ended, made me go back and read the beginning again; sometimes I read each story twice. This is a fantastic book.

Once again , I'm entranced by Kiana's work!

I continue to read everything I find that came from her. Her imagination and vivid descriptions keep me spellbound and wanting more. Being familiar with the islands of Hawaii, I visualize the settings and feel strongly that I'm present and seeing her characters telling the stories of their lives. Excellent reading!

This collection took me several years to read. In hindsight I’m glad to have given it extra time. The writing has an authenticity you rarely find. The scope of cultures and time periods provided a window into histories I’d never known. At times I struggled to see these as just fictional stories. The characters felt real and the struggles are heartbreaking. I read a few things twice and found myself more engaged. Initially I borrowed the book, but ended up buying a copy to keep and revisit.

Such beautiful writing

By topical necessity, these stories are depressing but they are so beautifully written and what they are telling so important to know that everyone should read them. Davenport is brilliant! Read everything she has written!

Reading Davenport's prose is like diving down deep and then heading back to the surface, only you may not have enough air to get there. That feeling of being on the dangerous edge of something. Her descriptions are some of the best I've read in a long time.
