What is Tanathos, and why will a mysterious cult kill to find it? Armed with the remnant of a burned map, Colleen Garman is in the Dutch East Indies, trying to solve the mystery of Tanathos. But the South Pacific in the 1920s is a dangerous place, and the cult is hot on her heels. From a rooftop chase in Java to a showdown in the jungle on an isolated island, she's fighting for her life and trying to stay one step ahead of the cult. The stakes have never been higher. The cult wants to open a portal and let a mad ancient god loose in the world. And Colleen knows the danger is real. The malevolent god has started invading her mind... Isolated and betrayed, faced with murder and mayhem, Colleen is in the fight of her life. She will need every scrap of courage, every shred of ingenuity, every steam-powered gadget she can devise, if she is ever going to make it off of Dark Island with her life - and her soul.
The author provided a free book for an honest review.
Another addition to a fun series, this time the adventure takes young Coleen and her new partners to a mysterious island to dig up ancient secrets before the cult of the Old Ones. This installment features a few more hints of the ominous threat the heroes are up against as dark forces attack the hero’s sanity even as cultists prepare to mount an attack.
And all the while, some mysterious artifacts are brought to the surface.
On the plus side, the author’s knowledge of history and skill with fun and exotic locations in on display, along with the introduction of fun and colorful characters. The inventive use of steam was another welcome addition. The main character continues to impress with her daring and her know-how.
SPOILER-
However, we still haven’t seen any far-out monsters yet, and although there are hints of some advanced tech, nothing is put into action. I still await a giant tentacled Old One fighting a mech.
Also, it strained credibility somewhat that she suffers a serious and potentially debilitating wound and blood loss late in the book, yet manages to pull off some impressive feats.
This is the second of six novellas in this series. This episode brings our heroine and her colleagues to a dark, uncharted but known island in the South Pacific. There is lots of action, and this is Brent Nichols' strength, graphic, violent action scenes. It is here that we learn of the cult of Katharis, a being from another dimension/world who can only be brought through via the use of special tablets that create a "portal". With much creativity and growing toughness, our heroine survives and escapes and is off on the next adventure. I suppose I should mention the Lovecraft connection. Katharis is a being, a monster, much tentacled and much like descriptions of Chthulu of Lovecraft fame. This is a series just for fun, any reader looking for deep meaning or tempting ways to contact the "other side" need look elsewhere.
...and the crazy madcap story continues. The over all story line was predictable, however I did enjoy the details in the ingenuity of the main character as well as her spunk. ?In all honesty I have already purchased the next story Hell's Gate, and am close to half way through it, because I do have to see it to an end.
