This is a collection of brief, pithy stories that have some vital lesson at their core. Each one has been chosen by a rabbi and there is commentary on why s/he finds that story meaningful, and sometimes what it means it terms of Judaism. Some of the tales are more specific to Judaism than others, but most can be understood and enjoyed without any background in the religion or culture. One of my favorites, The Empty Pot, has also been attributed to other cultures (there's a wonderful Chinese version by the same title in a picture book by Demi).

This book is a collection of 54 stories, each chosen by a different Rabbi.
I've always loved folk stories. This collection reminded me of some that I used to read with my grandmother when I was young, so nice memories.
Some of these stories are very traditional & well-known, some quite different and unique. I especially enjoyed reading why each Rabbi chose the story as their favorite.

11/2/25: I enjoyed the book even more this time- selected a story to share with an inter generational class I’m teaching. It was hard to pick just 1, & led to a great discussion.

A thought provoking collection of stories that touch on some of the fundamental values of Judaism. Sweet and mostly succinct, they range from the comical to the touching. Highly recommended reading!
