This is the most in-depth Saddle Seat book I have ever had my hands on, and I've read my share of "horse books" over the years. Lilly excellently breaks down the fundamentals of each little piece of riding as if you are picking up the reins for the first time as a green beginner. He not only goes into the history of horsemanship and application across disciplines, but also makes it relateable to anyone who has ever admired a horse. As a seasoned rider and horse show campaigner, I still found myself writing down some of the useful tips that he's included on not just how things are done and done right, but also the ever important WHY of what's being done.
The physics behind leverage and bitting, bridling, and riding a horse were excellent go to points for everyday riding, but applying his concepts on ring navigation and showmanship to promoting a horse to the best of it's abilities will prove an invaluable tool.
As someone who has admired Lilly's work for years and watched his ride to the top, the inclusion of personal anecdotes and references to good horses he has trained over the years was an added bonus. The attention to detail and everyday excellence that Lilly shows in the operation of Mercer Springs also shines through in this meticulous account of horsemanship. Excellent literary debut Smith, would love to see what you come up with next :)
