Accompanying an exhibition at the Seattle Art Museum that runs from December 2000 to March 2001, this volume is lavishly illustrated with numerous examples of Sargent's oils, watercolors, and sketches, in particular his portraits and studies of models and dancers. 115 illustrations, 75 in color.
This is an insightful biography of an artist who's personal life isn't often delved into. And the imagery is dripping and luscious and plain unreal (for those of us who wish we could say 1/2 as much with our paintbrushes). Sargent's work is humbling and beautiful and inspiring, and I recommend this book for anyone looking to get a small bit of his vision in their work.
This is my personal favorite of the many Sargent books available. It is lovingly compiled and beautifully written. The text and visuals taken together provide a fresh look at one of the greatest American painters.
I knew little about art and nothing about Sargent before reading this book. I'm interested right now in books about late 19th-early 20th Anglo-English world.
Groundbreaking critical work on Sargent that shows the range of Sargent's interests in men and women, as portrait subjects, and as subjects/objects of desire.
