A great start to a semi-dark, romantic fantasy series. Perian and Randrik are both wonderful main characters. Although Randrik is flawed and a bit conceited, he gradually grows out of his carefree ways to become a responsible guardian of Perian. Perian herself comes off as harsh and withdrawn at first, but it is soon realized why she is this way and that she will also find a way to overcome her fears and stubborness.
