The communist threat had never seemed so real!. AXE had barely assigned Nick Carter to his new mission when the message came from 'the spoilers'. They were threatening to deal a blow to American intelligence influence. It was clearly a job for Nick Carter Killmaster, the most lethal of his career. For AXE's top agent was destined to play the lead in the diabolical plot.
Nick Carter is a house pseudonym used by Award, Ace, and later Jove, publishing for the series Nick Carter who later graduated to a special agent for the Killmaster novels, a series of 261+ spy adventures published from 1964 until late 1990s.
A great number of writers have written under the pen-name over the years, beginning in September 1886 when Nick Carter first appeared in the 'New York Weekly' in a 13-week serial, entitled 'The Old Detective's Pupil; or, The Mysterious Crime of Madison Square'.
The Nick Carter character was originally conceived by Ormond G. Smith, the son of one of the founders of Street & Smith, and realized by John R. Coryell.
I haven't read one of these in probably twenty years. I had forgotten just how much fun and wildly un-PC they are, especially these days.
As fans know, the character got his start in 1886 as a private detective in the dime novels. He stayed a detective through the 50s, before the publisher closed up shop. In the 60s, he was revived as an espionage agent ala Bond of course.
Here, Nick works for AXE and has his own license to kill. This particular book involves the KGB and mind-altering technology to turn men into robotic killers. Lots of fun, and the whole book takes place over only about four or five days. The woman (there is always one of course) is beautiful, smart, and deadly. Fortunately, she's not a marksman, or N3 would have had his story cut short.
Definitely not Spillane or literature, but a solid entry into the men's adventure series being churned out back then.
A nice rewrite of an old Pulp character. Recast more in the James Bond spy mode. Good quick men's adventure read. If you are looking for some fast paced action and adventure then this is a recommended read.
