Outstanding book that every parent and grandparent should have on his or her nightstand!
My mom bought me this book after hearing the author's astonishing testimony on a youtube clip from TV. Both of Mike Shreve's children, particularly his youngest, faced debilitating challenges in childhood (his daughter was diagnosed while still in utero with spina bifida as well as cretinism, severe mental retardation and the doctors suggested "alternatives" to having her). Shreve and his wife blessed the children, prayed scripture over them, and proclaimed them "perfect." When his daughter was born, the first words out of the doctor's mouth was "she's perfect." And she was.
As someone who regularly prays Psalms, the prayers of Paul, and other promises over my children, in the back of my mind I wondered if there was a need even to have this book. The 65 prayers and promises listed here from scripture contained many that I have not seized for my children, and so that added more fuel to the fire. But beyond that, the biggest message from this book was the exhortation that our faith and covenant with God is such a powerful mantle to cover our children and our children's children - many God-fearing people are in dismay because of the choices of their children, and this book served as an enormously encouraging reminder not to give up or start "speaking death" over their children, despite what they see happening in the natural.
Now that I finished praying these promises over my children (and their future spouses), I plan to read through it all over again and pray the blessings over the children we sponsor overseas, as well as the daughter of a friend of mine who is not a believer that the Lord kept laying on my heart as I read this.
We are currently reading this book and Gary Smalley's The Blessing in the ladies Bible study I help lead. I can't remember a book that I bought/gave away/recommended so many copies to as I did Shreve's - it is really that worth it. For who can fix a price on altering the course of a child's life - or perhaps even a generation because of his influence on it?

An excellent and timely reminder to myself to be actively praying for my children, claiming scriptural promises over their lives, and trusting God’s work to be fruitful in each of their hearts. As a reformed Presbyterian, I often ere on the side of cautious, practical prayer. I don’t pray enough big things for my children, things he longs to give them. Gifts and talents and ABUNDANT LIFE. I hope to continue to come back to this book as I raise them up, remembering that I am not captain of their destinies, but God is and I am privileged to be a part of it.

I love the powerful prayers and explanations of scripture in this book. However, I believe the author is a bit misguided in a couple of areas. In many parts of the book, he implies that only children who are biologically yours are your children. He never recognizes the possibility that children come to us in other ways such as adoption or foster care. He also implies that the parents will only be well protected if they have many children.

Direction
Sometimes as parents we just need direction on what to pray… on what promises we can firmly stand on. This book is for you if that’s what you need. It’s greatest reminder is to not be afraid of what this world could influence your child(Ren) to do, but stand on God’s word and how promises to your children and their children, etc. Have hope and speak these promises often and with conviction! Your child /children will be all that God says they are!
